PixelfedWine (@wine@pixelfed.social)2019 Virgen del Galir Mencía Valdeorras Pagos del Galir Éntoma, Galicia, Spain 14.5% ABV $18.99 / 87 Served at 60º F / 15.5º C after a 40-minute decant. Bought at a nice local shop specializing in Spanish and Portuguese wines. The wine is primarily Mencía with a minority mix of other varieties. Mencía is produced in both Portugal and Spain, and this one hails from the Valdeorras region of Galicia which often produces a lighter and more fragrant expression than what’s found elsewhere. Soils were clay loam and, predominantly, deep slate. Grapes were destemmed but not crushed to preserve the primary aromas. Aged 10 months in French oak. A fairly opaque deep ruby in the glass, with moderate Gibbs-Marangoni (legs). A very aromatic sweet cherry on the nose with some floral notes. On the palate, dry and bright with medium-plus acidity, medium powdery tannins, raspberry, wet gravel and leather, with some herbal spice and tart cherry on the medium finish. A little graphite. Medium-bodied and fresh. Balance leans toward the acidity. Moderately complex with high intensity flavor. Had with poached cod in a tomato garlic broth, orzo salad with arugula and sundried tomatoes, Ratatouille, cheese raviolis, Caprese salad and a baguette. The wine went with the raviolis and Caprese salad, was a little acidic with the cod and orzo and it fought too much with the ratatouille, which had been roasted in the oven (delightful, just not with this wine). This food pairing wasn’t the best, and the wine succeeds better on its own. On Day 2, after a 24-hour decant and without food: at 64º F, aroma and palate are largely unchanged from yesterday. I’ll add pomegranate to the palate. Will next try the more earthy variety from Bierzo. I can see enjoying this more if it were less acidic and more earthy. My interest is piqued. I hope yours is as well. #wine #wineReview #spain
