The second stop on the Golden Circle tour we took in 2015 was at Gullfoss waterfall which has sudden, wide drops of dozens of metres in a canyon. A viewing area along the top offers the more typical shots most tourists take of these thunderous falls and we did take those too, but we also had the chance to clamber down to ground level and were glad to take it because the wind was ferocious on the more exposed plateau above.

We're on cold, unforgiving land, highly rocky with no sign of plant life anywhere. Deep, heavy clouds are overhead. We're standing beside a tumultuous river of water cascading over ledges and rocks. It's part of a far higher waterfall but we're low down and out of sight of the main falls; low enough, in fact, that to the right all we can see is water to where it meets the sky at the horizon and we could easily believe this is the open ocean. To the left a jagged set of rocky cliffs step up. There's a dark, red tint to the rock. This is a volcanic area.

Our weekend break in Iceland in 2015, our first visit to the country, included tickets for the popular Golden Circle tour. This started with a visit to a geothermal spot on the otherworldly Icelandic landscape where Strokkur was located. Strokkur is a fountain-type geyser that erupts around every eight minutes, shooting heated water up around twenty metres. We watched it erupt several times but the land around was equally fascinating. Bubbling puddles and the overwhelming smell of sulfur in a red-tinted landscape that could be Earth in some primordial age.

An unwelcoming landscape of red, rocky mud run through with shallow depressions that hint at some regular water flow. The land rises slightly in front of us to some low hills of similar red rock beyond. It's like a scene from Mars. The sky is oppressively grey, overcast, and the area suggests recent rain and the threat of more soon. There is a dip in the landscape just ahead of us and to the left, and rising from it is a cloud of steam, drifting and thinning as it rises up and to the left. To the right there is a line of tourists in coats and hats, most gazing at the steam, anticipating action from this volcanic geyser.

Ein beliebtes Highlight im Nationalpark Thingvellir Island ist die Silfra-Spalte. Sie ist durch das Auseinanderdriften der Eurasischen und Nordamerikanischen Kontinentalplatte entstanden. Du kannst in der Silfra-Spalte tauchen und schnorcheln. Da das Wasser kristallklar ist, kann man hier bis zu hundert Meter tief sehen.

Der Nationalpark Thingvelllir in Island liegt an einer sogenannten Grabenbruchzone. Hier driften die Eurasischen und Nordamerikanischen Kontinentalplatten auseinander. Dadurch entstehen Spalten und Schluchten, wie z.B. die Almannagjá-Schlucht. Du hast die Möglichkeit, durch diese Schlucht zu spazieren.

One day we did the #GoldenCircle tour, taking in #Thingvellir National Park, #Gullfoss falls, some geysers and #Friðheimar tomato farm. Thingvellir is where the North American and European tectonic plates are moving further away. Gullfoss falls are amazing and from there we saw a strange cloud formation over a distant mountain, that even the guide hadn't seen before. After a visit to watch the #Stokkur geyser blow a few times (wow!), we headed for as much tomato soup and bread as you could handle at Friðheimar tomato farm. They even brought over #vegan butter and sour cream for me. Fantastic! They have their own bees there, too, imported from the #Netherlands.
