Mathias30.12.22, Nordisland. Wir sind auf unserer 270 Kilometer langen Tour rund um die Halbinsel nördlich von Akureyri. In Dalvík schauten wir uns um, in Ólafsfjörður machten wir Rast und ließen uns vom netten Wirt erklären, wie schön es doch hier für junge Familien wäre, zu leben. Er erwarte uns in ein paar Jahren wieder. Links der Schnee, rechts das Meer. Nach Hofsós müssen wir unbedingt wieder zurückkehren, schließen wir. Wegen der schönen Aussicht auf’s Meer. Und dann sinkt die Temperatur auf unter -20°C, der Himmel ist plötzlich klar. Wir sind schon lange unterwegs, die Sonne ist untergegangen und hüllt das Tal in ein märchenhaft dumpfes Licht. MathiasNahezu unberechenbarer Wellengang, verwinkelte Steilküsten und flache Strände, plötzliche Wetterumschwünge und messerscharfes Lavagestein. Für das Touristenauge macht das einen großen Teil des isländischen Zaubers aus, für die Seefahrt und Fischerei ist es bestenfalls gefährlich. Besonders eindrücklich zeigt sich das in Djúpalónssandur, einem sandigen Strandabschnitt knapp westlich von Malarrif. Der Ort war früher für die Fischerei bekannt, 400 Menschen lebten in der Umgebung. Heute hört man nur das Meer rauschen und den Wind zwischen den spitzen Klippen pfeifen. Der komplette Strand ist übersät mit altem Holz und rostigen Schiffsteilen. Sie stammen von einem 1948 gekenterten Fischtrawler und erinnern daran, dass das vermeintliche Idyll in diesem Fall 14 Opfer gefordert hat. Kristia Adams PhotographyKvernufoss is the less known neighbor of Skogafoss in southern Iceland. Since it requires a little hike to get to, the bus tours don't usually include this beautifull waterfall. Kristia Adams PhotographyThis art installation overlooks the Djúpivogur Harbor. It honors a freed slave, Hans Jonathan, who became a successful merchant here in the late 1700's. Nearly every town that we visited had meaningful sculptures in place.
