draft - idea - an option in mastodon settings to

"Make my mastodon posts searchable across the fediverse without hashtags"

This could appease both sets of people

Those who want to continue using mastodon only with their posts searchable via hashtags

And

Those who want their posts to potentially reach a broader audience who may search without hashtags

Also, enables searching with quotes and pairs or sets of words and sentences that are disconnected with the space button, something that is impossible with hashtags

Boost Your Reach on Mastodon with #SEO!

Are you looking to expand your presence on Mastodon, the increasingly popular social network? Search Engine Optimization (#SEO) is your secret weapon! #SEO isn't just for traditional search engines like Google or Bing; it's also crucial for social networks like #Mastodon. By optimizing your posts for #searchability, you increase the chances of them being seen and shared, catapulting your content to new heights.

Here's why #SEO should be a part of your #Mastodon strategy:

  1. Visibility: With the right keywords, your posts can reach beyond your followers to the wider Mastodon community and even to users on other platforms.

  2. Engagement: #SEO-optimized content tends to be more engaging, which can lead to more likes, reblogs, and comments.

  3. Networking: By appearing in search results more often, you're more likely to connect with like-minded individuals and grow your network.

  4. Authority: Consistently appearing in searches can establish you as an authority in your niche, whether it's technology, art, or activism.

I kind of understand what you’re saying but I also believe in the effect of “ social #gravity ” ( #Herdentrieb [herd instinct], basically ), even though, at the same time, I hate it.
Things can #change, they can be broken and they can be rebuilt; in times like these, #disruption by means of #people power is what’s desperately needed – no less, no #reforms!

If, on the one hand, major centers of this type of gravity were to take a true and instant leap and move their primary #publishing away from #X, and on the other hand, content #accessibility – advanced and global #searchability and #filtering in particular – were to see major improvements, then we might at one point see a chain reaction of major user #migration and eventual emergence of an X like experience.
As an individual and „regular“ participant, a lot of #patience and #steadfastness are required in order to not keep feeding the #monster but X and its crowd constantly make it easier because their signal to #noise ratio keeps worsening by the minute.
What’s missing outside of X, #Telegram etc. is certain essential #content, like the #videos shared by #activists around the world, documenting #injustices of all kinds. Naturally, a handful of people like us can’t replicate those in the #Fediverse, so – repeating my thesis – without major publishing and #distribution hubs moving here, one will always have to resort to X in order not to miss out.
So, to be frank and blunt: where are all those #leftist and pro- #Palestinian groups, and what’s the hold-up? 🤷‍♂️

Another reason (not to be underestimated) why people are reluctant to leave X is that the #platform gives the impression that there was meaningful #interaction between the “ #elites “ and the #masses – a #sinister ploy of #illusion and #delusions: they • don’t • care – at all! Dismantlement of the #myth of the #participatory feature of X is key; there’s neither #equality nor #fairness there, but without those, it can never be a tool of #democracy.

Reposting a critical tip regarding #searchability from @feditips@mstdn.social - particularly aimed at MSM outlets that simply tag their articles with #press.

"Do you want your posts to be seen by as many people as possible on here?"

If so, it's important to use hashtags. Hashtag searches are the main way people find posts on the Fediverse. If a post doesn't have hashtags, people probably won't see it in search results.

Don't worry about using too many tags! As long as they are relevant, it is fine to have lots of tags. Many put a long list of them at the end of the post.

Also, if you are using tags, it's important to set the post's visibility to "Public" so that the post appears in search results.

On Mastodon you can set a post's visibility by clicking the visibility icon at the bottom of the post when you're writing it (the icon looks like a globe
🌐 , lock 🔒 or @ sign).

You can set your default post visibility by logging in through the website and going to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy, select the default you want and click "Save Changes".

For antifascist researchers moving here, we think the biggest hurdle is not the lack of #quotability but the lack of #searchability. The hashtag-only search function makes it very difficult to find accurate and timely information from other researchers.

A lot of people on Mastodon don't want those functions and have perfectly logical reasons as to why: privacy, and reducing vulnerability to harassment. Ideally, both quotability and searchability would be added into the basic interface but only as opt-in. So those of us who WANT to be fully searchable and quotable could opt in, while others would simply maintain the privacy boundaries they currently enjoy.

We are looking into Akkoma for more specialized antifascist research use, which apparently federates with Mastodon but allows those kinds of functions.

However, the argument that lack of QTs reduces conflict doesn't seem to play out. Every time we've talked about racism on Mastodon we've gotten plenty of conflict without QTs and have had to block quite a few clueless techbro types.

Other arguments against QTs are more valid though. On Twitter, they do encourage manipulative harvesting social capital via easy dunking, for example, and result in a lot of repetitive BS that kind of lowers useful discussion for everyone.

It seems like the best long-term solution would be basic opt-in privacy levels so any user could set their posts to be either quotable or not quotable, searchable or not searchable. That way, no one is forced into a new feature they don't want.

Here's a question for antifascists who, like us, have one foot here and one on Twitter (we're expecting to be banned there any day, though): what do you think about Mastodon's lack of searchability, and is there a way to compensate for it?

This is a fantastic platform in many ways - real human moderation, no ads, non-corporate, etc. - but for antifascist research purposes, it has one huge drawback: lack of easy searchability to quickly find recent information about fash activity. There's nothing like Twitter's Advanced Search capability that so many of us are familiar with using.

We understand and respect that many Fediverse users don't want advanced search capabilities for privacy reasons. But is there a way to work around this for those of us who do really want our content searched? We're using hashtags more and more, but the hashtag system is also a little difficult, since it won't accept spaces.

Let's say we publish information on a certain Chad Chuddington III, member of ChudForce and active across GA, TN and SC but based in West Chudton, GA. How would we present that information so that it can be searched by anyone else looking for fash in those orgs operating in those states?

Tagging @admin @moderation in case they have opinions or suggestions on this.
