Do you want your posts to be seen by as many people as possible on here?

If so, it's important to use hashtags. Hashtag searches are the main way people find posts on the Fediverse. If a post doesn't have hashtags, people probably won't see it in search results.

Don't worry about using too many tags! As long as they are relevant, it is fine to have lots of tags. Many put a long list of them at the end of the post.

Also, if you are using tags, it's important to set the post's visibility to "Public" so that the post appears in search results.

On Mastodon you can set a post's visibility by clicking the visibility icon at the bottom of the post when you're writing it (the icon looks like a globe 🌐 , lock 🔒 or @ sign).

You can set your default post visibility by logging in through the website and going to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy, select the default you want and click "Save Changes".

@feditips and don't forget, hashtag capitalisation of words in the #HashTag really helps screen readers, as does putting the tags at the end of the post. #accessibility #MastoTips #FediTips

@feditips I admit I'm confused by tension in these suggestions versus scholar.social etiquette. ❤️💔

@wait_sasha

Do they not like hashtags on that instance?

(I'm not suggesting adding irrelevant tags or anything like that, by the way.)

@feditips mstdn.social is "limited" on scholar social because it (used to?) federate with Gab (is Gab even in #fediverse still?)

"Posts from these servers will be hidden in public timelines and conversations, and no notifications will be generated from their users interactions, unless you are following them"

As I understand the rules as long as posts are behind a CW you are OK if you follow other rules. Not sure about "boosts."

@wait_sasha

I'm not sure where that info comes from, Mstdn.social absolutely does not federate with Gab!

If you scroll down the about page of mstdn.social it has a very long list of banned racist/homophobic/hate speech etc instances including gab.com:

mstdn.social/about/more

The admin of mstdn.social is a really nice person who takes a strict line against bigotted instances.

@feditips interesting. I'm loathe to bother admin with this. I'm just quoting the scholar. social page.

@wait_sasha

I can't see any list of blocked instances on the page you linked to?

@wait_sasha

There is no such section visible to me at scholar.social/about/more

Perhaps it is somehow hidden from people who aren't members?

I've sent the admin a message about this.

@wait_sasha

Hey, update on this. I have been in touch with the admin of scholar.social and explained that this was a mistaken report.

They just replied that they are happy to remove the block, so you shouldn't have any problems with etiquette any more 👍

@wait_sasha @feditips Some instances show the blockist only to users logged in on that instance.

For example, I can see the blockist on tech.lgbt if I log in to my account there, but not if I logout.

@wait_sasha @feditips wow - what a toxic instance. "no cryptocurrency apologia" from a place called "scholar.social". I nice whiff of irony right here.
