I like the song, but I was prompted to post this stage by MiU's (she's the opening singer) midriff adornment.
I know the usual names for such body jewelry in English are "belly chain" or "waist chain", but I dislike those terms as they remind me of "lavatory/toilet chain".
I wish instead we would start using the Hindustani "kamarband", which to my ear sounds prettier, is neatly cognate with "cummerbund", and also calls attention to the south Asian ancestry of this charming accessory.
Another cover of Creep by #radiohead but with an #india #indian #hindustani #desi flavour thanks to a mother-and-son collab and it's simply beautiful.

Found this second hand in a record store for only 12 euro's. It comes with a massive book explaining everything about classical Hindustani music and ragas. I will probably never read that but the music on the 4cd's accompanying the booklet is also fantastic. More than 5 hours musical magic from these artists;
#HariprasadChaurasia, #BuddhadevDasgupta, #ShrutiSadolikarKatkar & #VidyadharVyas
#Raga Guide (A Survey Of 74 #Hindustani Ragas) 4cd + book on #NimbusRecords 1999

At Pritzker Pavilion for a free concert of Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer with Rakesh Chaurasia and The Arab Blues hosted by the City of Chicago and the South Asia Insitutue.
The concert has not started but we are excited - the music is a fusion of Western and Indian classical, along with Americana - will report back!
What a great way to start the week

I’m trying to learn a beautiful little #Hindustani composition in raag Kafi for #Holi. Kafi is parallel to Dorian mode in western music, but with specific rules.
It’s only two stanzas, but my gosh the nuances—microtones, ornamentation, glides— in Indian music are so difficult to get right!
I’ve been listening to this performance of Kafi by my teacher Debashish Bhattacharya for inspiration.
Live #Hindustani music concert streaming right with Pt #DebashishBhattacharya and on #slideguitar and Pt #AnandiChattarjee on #tabla.

Putting together promo materials for Debashish Bhattacharya’s Fall tour in the US. Dates TBA soon.
I’ve been pulling together various footage to make reels. Here’s a two-minute version.
And one more sample. Even though it is short, just watch the performer's hands.
We had a great time - and even encountered a few people we met last year.
Note: this thread is a cleaned-up repost of a thread that was made a bit poorly on a phone.

Ragamala! An all-night festival of Hindustani and Carnatic Indian classical music held at the Chicago Cultural Center. We only stayed for one session but we got to see Gaurav Mazumdar on sitar and Amit Kavthekar on tabla. They were students of the great Ravi Shankar and Zakir Husain respectively.

I am obsessed with this. Are there any bands out there making #music like this? #Hindustani #classical music + #ProgMetal? This is really, really cool and I need more of it. lol

Your criticism was not of TOI's news or editorial content but that of an ad. The advertisers presumably know the target market they wish to reach. Hindi is not the language of a specific state or a specific tribe. #Hindi, #Hindustani, #Urdu and other closely related languages and dialects are most widely spoken in India. For an advertiser trying for maximum reach in a national daily, there is nothing INAPPROPRIATE in choosing a popular language even if a regional choice be better
Another great release hidden away from the world in the Bandcamp enclave on Mappa; the genre melting debut from Texas based dreamer & reality tunnel breacher Plume Girl, aka Sowmya Somanath - a Hindustani classical singer/composer who weaves her vocal magic through the Hindustani folk past & twisted modern pop present, imagining a fairly shared, culturally harmonious, artistically adventurous future as she goes.

"Witnesses from #WestBengal expected to communicate before UP Court in Hindi"
Why is this a shocker? #Hindi and #English are two official languages of #India. Is that in dispute?
#Hindi, #Hindustani, & #Urdu are spoken by the majority in #UttarPradesh. So what's the controversy over using Hindi in a #UP court?
In 2019 #Hindustani vocalist #AnandiBhattacharya was here in #ChapelHill. She told me she needed to go to Asheville to find musicians who played traditional American music for a song she wrote for a PBS documentary. I laughed and said she didn’t need to go to Asheville to find them. Indeed I made a quick call to Hank Smith and Pattie Hopkins, two of the finest traditional musicians in the US. A week later we had the final version of her track.
I studied #Hindustani #tala for a few years with Maya Misra, widow of Pt Ramesh Misra. Tala (or taal) is the system of counting beat cycles using the various sounds (bols) that a tabla makes. A few years ago I presented a lecture on the most basic taals. Each tala has a characteristic set of bols (called the theka). After you learn the theka, you practice accelerating how many bols are on a beat.
