Mike Babyak<p>1/ <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/gigstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gigstory</span></a> A few years ago we hosted the brilliant Bengali singer <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/AnandiBhattacharya" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AnandiBhattacharya</span></a> here in Chapel Hill. She had been commissioned to do a track for an upcoming <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/PBS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PBS</span></a> documentary and wanted to go to Asheville to find traditional southern musicians to do the session. Of course I explained that Asheville had nothing on the Triangle in that regard. We rounded up <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/HankSmith" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HankSmith</span></a> on banjo and <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/PattieHopkinsKinlaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PattieHopkinsKinlaw</span></a> on fiddle and ran to FJ Ventre’s</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://musicians.today/tags/raga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>raga</span></a> <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/raag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>raag</span></a> <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/fusion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fusion</span></a> <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/worldmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>worldmusic</span></a></p>
Mike Babyak<p>In 2019 <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/Hindustani" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hindustani</span></a> vocalist <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/AnandiBhattacharya" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AnandiBhattacharya</span></a> was here in <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/ChapelHill" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ChapelHill</span></a>. She told me she needed to go to Asheville to find musicians who played traditional American music for a song she wrote for a PBS documentary. I laughed and said she didn’t need to go to Asheville to find them. Indeed I made a quick call to Hank Smith and Pattie Hopkins, two of the finest traditional musicians in the US. A week later we had the final version of her track. </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Mike Babyak<p><a href="https://musicians.today/tags/TBT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TBT</span></a> Back in 2018 our friend <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/AnandiBhattacharya" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AnandiBhattacharya</span></a> was asked to contribute a tune for a PBS documentary. She wanted to be backed by traditional southern musicians. We rounded up two virtuosos— <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/HankSmith" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HankSmith</span></a> on banjo and Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw on fiddle. I added dobro, along with E Scott Warren on bass and Ed Butler on drums. <br>Sadly, the documentary ran out of funds and we got stuck eating the recording costs. But we did get a nice track out of it. <br><a href="https://musicians.today/tags/mastomusicians" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mastomusicians</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/1rluV2aq9dw</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
