Three different approaches to expanding a #historic building upwards with #modern #design:

The first picture shows the youth hostel in Halle an der Saale. While the materials strongly differ from the original building, the expansion appears subtle and organic. Due to the color choice and the slight set back, the viewers attention remains mostly on the main building.

The second picture shows the Moritzburg #Museum (by Nieto Sobejano), also in #HalleanderSaale. The big glass panels and upwards metal structures pose a clear distinction from the detailed and irregularly shaped bottom part. While not imitating the historic castle, the glass and steel seem to sort of fade away into the sky and thereby still give room to the original substance.

The third picture shows the #porthouse in #antwerp (by #ZahaHadid). The new structure is not about coherence, but about striking lines and futuristic design. The #diamond shape pays hommage to the city’s history in jewelry trade and poses a stark contrast to the much more formal and traditional bottom building.
