#Southern is supporting the recovery of a vital kelp forest off the #Sussex coast, one of Britain’s most biodiverse #habitats. The #railway company is funding a study by the University of Sussex and Blue Marine Foundation, using underwater cameras to monitor the forest’s recovery after decades of trawler #fishing. The research focuses on #biodiversity and kelp forest management. Kelp #forests, crucial to #marine life, coastal protection, and CO2 sequestration, were damaged by a 1987 storm and further harmed by commercial fishing. However, a 2021 trawling ban has enabled recovery, restoring marine life such as sharks, eels, and crustaceans. Jason Brooker of Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates Southern, emphasised the importance of supporting biodiversity, aligning with their commitment to sustainability. Xanthe Caldecott from #GreenTheUK praised the collaboration’s role in preserving nature and fighting climate change.
