The wreck and not the story of the wreck, the thing itself and not the myth

I came to explore the wreck.
The words are purposes.
The words are maps.
I came to see the damage that was done
and the treasures that prevail.
I stroke the beam of my lamp
slowly along the flank
of something more permanent
than fish or weed

the thing I came for:
the wreck and not the story of the wreck
the thing itself and not the myth
the drowned face always staring
toward the sun
the evidence of damage
worn by salt and sway into this threadbare beauty
the ribs of the disaster
curving their assertion
among the tentative haunters.

- Adrienne Rich, Diving into the Wreck
Poets.orgDiving into the WreckFirst having read the book of myths,

: o, the ignominy of admitting that i'm not extremely intimate with my subject's oeuvre...
still, she sounds so rad that i had to make sketchy ode to adrienne rich (born in 1929). an essayist & poet who centred the oppression of women & lesbians in her work, adrienne was also a jewish pro-palestinian activist involved with the new agenda, which supported the movement.

Adrienne Rich - "For an Anniversary"

The wing of the osprey lifted
over the nest on Tomales Bay
into fog and difficult gust
raking treetops from Inverness Ridge on over
The left wing shouldered into protective
gesture the left wing we thought broken

and the young beneath in the windy nest
creaking there in their hunger
and the tides beseeching, besieging
the bay in its ruined languor

Celebrating a wedding anniversary today, and coincidentally thumbed through Midnight Salvage from #AdrienneRich and found this waiting -- so seems like a natural #TodaysPoem

I don't think it's going too far to simply state that Adrienne Rich helped Janice Raymond to write The Transsexual Empire, and that everyone reading Rich's work should read it through that lens.
