Ho hum... another day, another National Minister breaches the Cabinet manual.

The loose unit this time is Erica Stanford who sent pre-Budget announcements to her Gmail account, prior to them being made public last year.

Naturally Christopher Luxon maintains he's "very relaxed" about the situation, but he says that every time one of his Ministers gets caught lying or breaking the rules.

Luxon's Nats are seriously tardy.

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Machine Learning from #Stanford Online 🎉

This was one of the most difficult #AI and #MachineLearning programs I've completed, and required quite a bit of mathematical modeling. But it was well worth it, and I got to deep dive into Supervised Learning, Unsupervised Learning, and advanced learning algorithms for AI systems. psafe.ly/fkwKgU

'phasing out animal agriculture over the next 15 years would have the same effect as a 68% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions through the year 2100. this would provide 52% of the net emission reductions necessary to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, which scientists say is the minimum threshold required to avert disastrous climate change.'

Google DocsStanford Should Stand with Harvard*We appreciate President Levin's and Provost Martinez's statement in support of Harvard this morning. They note that Harvard's objections are rooted in a tradition of liberty, that America's universities are important, and that constructive change cannot come by destroying the nation's capacity for scientific research or the government taking control of private institutions. We urge them to go further, however: to issue a statement of their own on behalf of Stanford condemning the government's actions and vowing to stand in solidarity with Harvard and other universities to defend American higher education. **To sign this letter, scroll to the very bottom of the form and submit your signature April 14th, 2025 Dear President Levin, Alan Garber's letter this morning has been a beacon of hope for many of us on campus. While addressed to Members of the Harvard Community, the letter generously invokes all private universities. It expresses what America’s great universities mean to the country and to the world, as bastions of free thought and inquiry that transform the lives of people everywhere. President Garber states a fundamental principle of academic freedom: no government should dictate what we teach, who we admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry we pursue. For the government to abandon its partnership with universities, as President Garber writes, will endanger the lives of millions and jeopardize the nation’s economic security and vitality. He also clearly identifies the peril we face: assertions of power, unmoored from the law, seeking to destroy what has been built with brilliance and dedication over generations. President Garber is speaking for all of us in higher education, for the American public, and for everyone throughout the world who benefits from the work we do. This is why it gives us great hope when he promises that Harvard will not surrender. Harvard and President Garber have admirably and courageously taken a leadership position in standing up for American higher education. We are writing to urge you to make a strong, public statement of support and stand with Harvard. Be as firm and clear as President Garber in vowing to defend our autonomy and uphold our crucial ability to define the terms under which we teach, do research, and serve the public good. It is past time for Stanford to follow the example of Sally Kornbluth (MIT), Christopher Eisgruber (Princeton), Michael Roth (Wesleyan), William Treanor (Georgetown Law), and others to take a stand in solidarity with our peers in this existential assault on universities. As many in the Stanford community have pressed for more than a month, and as more and more university leaders are showing us now, if the AAU and all of America's powerful universities stood side by side, we would be formidable indeed. This fight cannot be carried out quietly or in private. Stanford’s message needs to be loud and clear so that yet other voices can join in. Together we will be an indomitable force in defense of “the fearless and unfettered pursuit of truth.” As President Garber quoted the Harvard motto, “Veritas,” we can add ours, “The Wind of Freedom Blows.” SIGNATURES OF STANFORD FACULTY AND LECTURERS 1. “However, #HAI highlights the enormous level of investment still being pumped into the sector, with global corporate #AI investment reaching $252.3 billion in 2024, up 26 percent for the year. Most of this is in the US, which hit $109.1 billion, nearly 12 times higher than China's $9.3 billion and 24 times the UK's $4.5 billion, it says. …Despite all this #investment, "most companies that report financial impacts from using AI within a business function estimate the #benefits as being at low levels," the report writes.”
