This spring, at the ripe age of 33, I started drawing. One of my primary goals was to create graphics for my little games. At this point, after about 200 hours of practice, I think I am pretty close to being able to draw anything I want. Especially in the context of retro game dev and pixel art.

In this log, I want to talk about two major topics: the progress I've made since the note and the importance of intention in character design. Incidentally, I will share my thoughts on why GenAI art will always be mediocre at best.

As an eye trap, here's a character I've finished a month ago (and I've improved since)

Added different cursors! Now there is an invisible (to the Plinks, blue) cursor, which makes it possible to move around without the Plinks noticing. This will be practical later.

There’s also the previous standard: the benign yellow mouse moth. This one is visible to the Plinks, and they get curious and follow it around, depending on their traits.

And then there is the evil mouse moth. This one scares the Plinks. Its effect feels a little like a kid running through a flock of pigeons. Depending on their traits, Plinks will flee from it. Some flee very early, others very late. Some stop fleeing quickly, while others keep fleeing as long as they see the moth.

As you can see, the sprites for the baby Plinks haven't been finished yet, so sometimes they blink out of existence. Or their hats do.

Oh, also visible, baby Plinks follow a preferred adult and don't get scared yet.
