The #digitalmuseum we need:

“It’s a research library. It’s there to record and make available an accurate version of the past,” @brewsterkahle says. “Otherwise, we’ll end up with a George Orwell world where the past can be manipulated and erased.”

Really looking forward to this talk about Google Arts & Culture by T. Leo Cao ( tlcao.work ) at this year's #digitalmuseum conference of Belvedere Museum:

We need more insights into the power dynamics around surveillance capitalist companies in the museum sector.

Any examples of accessible AND innovative/intriguing online collections design? Whether for Museums, online galleries, libraries, independent craft shops?

"Could our ‘inclusive’ best practice in fact be perpetuating long-standing exclusions, given the structural racism and colonial logics inherent in the broader museum project and its conventions, histories, and infrastructure?"

Workshop invitation: "Decentering collections. Power critique in collaborations and digital tools for power sharing"

At Pitt Rivers Museum in #Oxford 4-5 April:

museumsandsociety.net/en/news/

Please join us for this two day workshop, on day 2 I will facilitate a workshop on social aspects of digital collections (systems, algorithms and power). We want to look beyond the institutional authorities and see how digital tools can useful for power sharing and critical inquiry.

My latest book contribution: Lukas Fuchsgruber, "Image Archives in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism" in Moritz Neumüller (Ed.), The Routledge Companion to Photography, Representation and Social Justice. 2022

Excerpt: "Tracking does not only apply to social media platforms but can be about anything, from an online search to moving through the city with a smartphone. Public heritage institutions that provide and circulate their digitized collections online contribute to this economy in various ways, any time a digital interaction with their holdings occurs through these services. This complicity in surveillance capitalism is rooted in the missing public digital infrastructure for public collections. The cultural commons that these institutions care for need an infrastructure of digital public space, not only for circulation but also for conversation and interaction" (p. 351)
