It's officially #baseball season, so I thought it was as good a time as ever to read Two In The Field by Darryl Brock. It's the follow-up to his time travel/baseball novel If I Never Get Back. I read the first book in my adolescence, and then enjoyed it again about a year ago, which is also when I discovered the sequel.

Admit it: "time travel" and "baseball" is not a plot combo you've seen before! Somehow, Brock makes it work.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

"Do you know what was most interesting about living in the past?"

"Ugh. This again."

"I know you don't believe me—"

"Why would I? How could I?"

"—but I spent six years in the 1320s."

"So you say."

"Anyway, the most interesting thing is that it wasn't a 'simpler time.'"

"Who said it would be? I never thought it would be."

Prompt 44 - a book that features a married couple who don't live together - March 25, 2025 - I love a good time travel tale, and this one is no exception. The story is unique, told from the point of view of a "bridge," a person employed by the government to help time travelers adjust to our timeline. It has intrigue, romance, and adventure. I feel like this book is going to stick with me for a long time.

#writephant #selfpromo The three of my books that are with a publisher (47North) have audiobook versions.

The amazing Mary Robinette Kowal, narrator extraordinaire, did the audiobooks for The Far Time Incident and its sequel!

And my standalone, Regarding Ducks and Universes, is narrated by wonderful Alexander Cendese!

Did you know we wrote not one brand new commedia dell'arte pastorale inspired by Cleveland ConCoction's theme this year but TWO brand new commedia dell'arte pastorale inspired by Cleveland ConCoction's theme this year. 🤣

While we couldn't stage it for the con, last week we workshopped over Zoom "Batte to the Future", a parody of the classic sci-fi movie series using Renaissance fantasy framing! This was originally a joke for April First a few years back but... now it's a play? Well, it's a good thing we always say those April 1st posters are productions we will {probably} never stage! 😂

Check back for "Batte" in the future but also watch next week as we do more fake play posters for April Fools Day!

The time engineers were puzzled at first, but then, they realized they were in a kind of late 21st century giza. The temples and pyramids looked as weathered as they’d known them from their timeline, but there were far more ancient buildings around them. And modern ones, too, including a strange looking radiation tower. An obelisk displayed a male face with a moustache, engraved into the sandstone.
“Look at this guy. Think I’ve seen him before. But -“
“What do the the runes say?“
“These are hieroglyphs. And they, hm, let me see... There seems to be a Hellenic translation.“
But he ad no time for deciphering the glyphs. Two red-robed guards approached, pointing laser guns at the visitors.
“Strangers!“ one of them said in Old Greek. “You are arrested for chronotronic misbehaviour. Follow us to the machine center or we will have to disintegrate your bioframe.“
“Machine center – that’s interesting. Don’t you have police stations here?“
“Our last Pharao died without a heir,“ the guard explained. “And instead of letting priests choose the next ruler, we use an electronic device for all decisions. For efficiency reasons, the Device took over als executive, legislative and judical responsibility.“
“Including religious matters,“ added the second guard, sounding proud of his advanced society.
Agent Jensen whispered in English, “Died without a heir, that was the plan. But this looks strange.“
“Poisoning the prince and seducing the princess obviously wasn’t enough to make this timeline vanish,“ Tomacek agreed. “Maybe we can complete the mission now.“
“I hope we find our way back to the entry point,“ Jensen replied.
The agents were escorted to the radiation tower and led through a door in the base of the tower.
“Strangers! Kneel down before the Device!“ the guard ordered.
“But no!“ a metallic voice said in fluent English and a retro-futuristic robot entered the room. The front of its head was a copper plate with Nicola Tesla’s face laser-etched on it.
“The moustache,“ Jensen murmured.
“Oh, how happy I am to finally have some decent company,“ the robot said eagerly. “And since I’ve been stuck in this timeline for some thousand years, I bet you brought some sort of time machine. Didn’t you?“
