@kevinrns @GuySylvestre

I gave up subscribing to the Edmonton Journal and Sun when they started being filled more and more with national columnists, many not from/in Alberta, and less and less location news/information content.

Just this week I happened to glance at a newspaper rack for the first time in years and was STUNNED to see both dailies physically smaller than a typical #CanadianTire weekly sales flyer. 😳😡

#CanadianTire money was once so ubiquitous that it was treated at par with the country's own currency. In fact, these glorified coupons were produced by the same companies printing the Canada's official #money bills.

The level of #design quality put into this loyalty program remained unmatched — I have framed copies of a few of the bills on display — until in all ended in 2020.

Here's the story of the funny money that made #Canada fun

Toronto Star · Canadian Tire stopped printing their own money in 2020. Inside the colourful rise and fall of Canada’s unofficial currencyBy Mark Colley

Home Depot, Lowes and even Rona are all US owned companies (Rona used to be Canadian but was bought out). To buy Canadian, look at #HomeHardware, local building supply places, independent locally owned hardware stores and #CanadianTire.
While the US-owned stores employ a lot of people, bigger demand in Canadian-owned placed means they'll have a chance to expand -- and hire more people. Not overnight, but if demand shifts it would happen.
Then, look to see where products come from. A lot of stuff isn't made in Canada, but the US isn't the only place that makes these things.

The plastic hook is quite hard and relatively thick, so my friend was concerned I wouldn't be able to cut it apart.

I explained that I cut plastics all the time: a little dollar store #hacksaw works amazingly well for the cut, and a multipack of fine-grit #sandpapers from #CanadianTire* lets me take care of any nasty edges.

* Seriously, automotive refinishing sandpapers are like MAGIC for fixing plastic things that are too sharp/snag, etc. ❤️

I just learned about Canadian Tire's brilliant product location feature. Find the product in their app (you might need to be connected to their store wifi so they know where you are, or maybe they use your GPS location), note the aisle number, walk to the aisle, tap the Find button and the digital price tag below the item starts beeping and flashing for 30 seconds. This is genius when you're looking at an aisle with lots of tiny parts that all look the same.

I've myself to patronizing the least bad and/or supporting Canadian-owned companies. Unfortunately there are no #HomeHardware stores in Montreal—ooh, though I just discovered there's one 20 min away in Laval! I also like #CanadianTire, though they don't have the range of building materials found in home improvement stores. But you can't get tires and hockey equipment at Lowe's amirite?

@sik0fewl Just scanning the net and discovered that #Telus has backed down after customer complaints - they're back to burying the interchange fee in their charges. Of course, customers aren't really saving money as a result - it's back to everyone pays.
#CanadianTire has successfully made credit card customers pay for years by giving less #CashBack on their points cards (Canadian Tire money) for credit card payments. No one else seems to get away with this though.
