Okay, working day is over. Now I can do coding crimes by programming in BASIC. Plan for today: catch up with trigonometry and make a proper math library in Vintage BASIC.
Got distracted and started tuning nibs for my pens earlier. Been awhile. It's easy to forget the rule: don't spend more than 15 minutes on a nib without taking a break. Unless it's titanium, then expect it to take at least an hour, and you'll need at least five breaks. Anyway... three of my scratchiest nibs are now buttery smooth. I love fountain pens... #theWorkshop #fountainPens
Okay, I've gotten back to #BASIC, and this time I dug deeper. Seems like there are means of abstractions after all. There are one-liner functions (DEF FN) and multi-line subroutines (GO SUB & RETURN.) So I can actually structure my programs without #GOTO-s! Maybe I'll implement #ed in BASIC after all...
A week later, I had a closer look at that varnish.. it looks bad in some places, however I'm considering to just remove it all.. it looks like it's there 'just' for looks. The natural teak underneath looks better than when the varnish was there to 'emphasize' contours...

#amWriting a post on biases in Rider-Waite Tarot. With some simple statistical/NLP methods to back it. Any biases I should cover, beyond gender and sentiment disbalance?
Tablet weaving update: made a bunch more cards, a bunch of bobbins, recycled a lot of yarn, and modified a pattern so I can start weaving.

Also, the same board (Core51822) running off a single 1.2v rechargeable AA battery (thanks to the magic of a DC-DC step-up converter). The multimeter shows the milliamps being pulled from the battery. #theWorkshop #blinky #assembly #electronics

Put out a new blog post about creative work: https://writing.natwelch.com/post/757
I am trying to write more shorter blog posts about content I consume. A little more than my old #happy posts, and focused on a smaller set of content.
I'm considering #BASIC as my next Turing tarpit to write #ed in. But I can't even seem to find good tutorials on it, let alone ones that aren't heavily implementation-dependent. What kind of subset can I use that will be portable across implementations? No idea. It sucks not having a standard for a language.
* Technically, there are two standards, Full BASIC and SmallBASIC, but both were abandoned in favor of Microsoft BASIC. And now I can't even find a reference for original MS BASIC!
My hand-built #eurorack #modular #synth case is complete (finally). Cedar and pine finished with beeswax. Joints are rabbeted and nailed. 104hp.
I'm pretty unhappy with the details in this one (as well as the overall effect of the wood choices, honestly). Keen eyes will spot many gaps, dents, dings, tears, and other cosmetic problems. I learned a lot though, not the least of which being how good a result I can get even without the aid of machinery.
The next project in this vein will be a tall folding case (17U x 104hp) built cheaply and hastily as a proof of concept like this one was. Then I'll start trying to make some with fancier joinery.
Some b-rolls from my long-time project Blue Spring Youth.
Thinking of trekking out to High Park again when the cherry blossoms bloom this spring.
Oh hell. It seems I lost the source code for hash tables in Brainfuck I was making for Brainfuck Enterprise Solutions' OS.bf. The handling of files in OS.bf is imperfect and I was hoping reliable hash tables will replace the existing filesystem there. But it seems that I didn't preserve the code anywhere, so all my (nearly complete) work on hash.bf is lost.
Not that I wanted to get back to it—I have new Turing tarpits to get stuck in. But still, it sucks losing labor produce.
