Photography is Like a Box of Chocolates

I saw this pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) pass overhead one morning. At the time, I didn’t know what it was—just a bird cutting across the sky. That’s often how it goes when I photograph birds in flight: I capture the moment first, identify the species later. I’m fairly certain there were two of them. I missed the shot when the first one flew by, but I know there’s a mated pair living somewhere in the woods behind my house. This one looks like a female.

Red Crest Rising

This is a male pileated woodpecker—a photograph I took a few months back. I caught a glimpse of a pair just yesterday; they touched down briefly in a nearby pine before continuing westward. That’s how most forest birds travel: small, cautious hops from tree to tree. I suppose it’s safer that way.

Hidden in the Thicket

Charlie and I set out again this morning, and about halfway through our walk, we spotted a male pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) hammering away at an old tree near a quiet city street. I couldn’t get a clear shot at first, but the bird lingered just long enough for me to adjust my shutter speed and aperture to work around the tangle of branches. When he finally took off, he flew across the street and perched briefly in the open—just long enough to tease me, but not long enough for me to get my camera in position.

Crested Majesty on a Woodland Branch

When I took this photograph, two pileated woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus)—a male and a female—were at the edge of the forest. This image features the male. Nearby, a hawk circled in the air. As I observed the woodpeckers, they seemed relatively unconcerned with the presence of the hawk, continuing their foraging undisturbed. However, in this photo, the male woodpecker appears to glance skyward, perhaps keeping an eye on the hawk.

A male Pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) decided the suet on a feeder was too good to pass up. I gave up on suet feeders on the trees as the gray squirrels eat everything within an hour.

Pileated woodpeckers are monogamous and territorial. They are currently considered the largest woodpecker species in North America unless some evidence is found that the Ivory Billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) still exists. There were sightings of the Ivory Billed in Cuba in the late 1980s.
