A large woodpecker, the pileated looks like Woody Woodpecker with his red crest and call that sound like a manic laugh. This bird is a male, as you can see from his red mustache.

This is a medium sized woodpecker, the red bellied woodpecker. You can see the ill-defined reddish patch on its belly that led to its name. This one is a male, as you can tell from the red-orange cap that extends from his bill over the top of his head.

This is a small woodpecker and the most common bird in my yard. It's also a male as you can tell by the red spot at the back of its head. It's a downy woodpecker, black and white all over.

Der zweite Augenblick kommt von einer männlichen Amsel, die sich in einer der Astgabeln des Glockenbaums befindet. Auch hier wieder der Fokus auf dem rechten, gelbumringten Auge.

I spotted this Ladder-backed Woodpecker up high when I heard it drumming on the tree branch. Woodpeckers peck on objects to create sound patterns as communication, like songbirds use melodies. The tempo, rhythm, duration, and repetition of drumming patterns vary between different woodpecker species.

Made a new friend on my run. Perhaps a hairy woodpecker. Red patch on the back of their neck was very faint. The trails are still muddy in spots, but a lot drier than I expected. Pathways are mostly clear. Beautiful running weather. Double long run weekend. After yesterday's wet slog, this was glorious. One more week of base and then a ten week build! I'm feeling cautiously optimistic! Looking forward to the grind!
