In the Castle Church of Wittenberg, the neo-Gothic princely pew made of oak stands between the pulpit and the chancel. Commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II, it was donated by Protestant German princes and the free cities of Lübeck, Hamburg, and Bremen. Designed by Friedrich Adler and executed by Wilhelm Lober, the 22 seats are adorned with coats of arms and ornate canopies.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born on 4 February 1906 in Breslau, then Germany (now Poland). He was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian and anti-Nazi dissident. Bonhoeffer was accused of being associated with the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and was tried along with other accused plotters. He was hanged on 9 April 1945 as the Nazi regime was collapsing.
