Photographing the "caretos" on the main day of Entrudo, Tuesday, is a challenge in itself. To begin with, Lazarim receives thousands of visitors on this day, each equipped with a "camera" - their smartphone, many wanting to take selfies with the caretos or photos with them. Considering also the narrow streets and not very large squares, the space becomes tight for so many people.
However, with some luck and help from the organization, there are certain moments when it's possible to divert the caretos to a more hidden, more scenic place, where it's easier to photograph them without having mobile phones in view, or people getting into the photos. But note, I have nothing against this, I'm just describing my experience.
It also helps to know the village and the route that the caretos follow on that day, which allows for anticipation and better preparation. Finally, it's also necessary to work with the weather conditions and the time of day, because during the ritual, we encounter different phases of the day, from very strong and high sun to its absence.

🇬🇧 The Careto is a mythical figure of Portuguese Carnival. The Careto of Lazarim is distinguished by its wooden mask carved by the hands of artisans and its attire, which, while not uniform, is fundamentally characterized by the use of common materials found in everyday life, whether they be plants, rags, straw, among others.
Its identity is meant to be mysterious, as the careto wants to be free from the constraints of identity, experiencing a unique sense of freedom. Protected by anonymity, they temporarily free themselves from judgments, social expectations, and conventions that normally regulate their everyday behavior. It is precisely in this anonymity that the essence of the celebration is found, but often this concealment is difficult to maintain for various reasons, as the careto may be a family member, friend, or acquaintance who is easily recognized by certain traits.
In the early days of this tradition, the Careto was someone local, as the festival was a cultural expression of the community itself. However, with the passage of time and the appreciation of these traditions as cultural heritage, participation has been opened to outsiders who wish to experience what it feels like to be a careto, becoming one of the strengths of our carnival. More important than a person's origin is respect for the tradition, such as the way the masks are used and the attitude adopted during the time wearing the costume. The careto should be playful, cheerful, and respectful of the community, not overstepping boundaries in their "pranks."
