Climate Action: California advocates urge state action in response to new federal administration

Jeanie Ward-Waller, interim director of ClimatePlan; Kendra Ramsey, executive director of California Bicycle Coalition; and representatives of 66 other California environmental, health, and housing advocacy groups, including active transportation advocates (full list in post) know that local and state governments still have control over many policy areas impacting #ClimateChange. They’re urging #California #Transportation Commission (CTC), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), California #Air Resources Board (CARB), and California Department of #Housing & Community Development (HCD) to act in response to POTUS 47.

In a motor vehicle, broken glass, car parts, and other sharp debris in a bike lane or on a road’s shoulder don't appear to be a big deal.

But on a bicycle, such debris is hazardous! To avoid puncturing a tire, a person biking is often compelled to “take the lane" in fast traffic, or to dismount and walk their bike—although they'll be on the wrong side of the road for a pedestrian (instead of walking "against traffic,” as California law and safety recommendations dictate, they’ll be walking "with traffic” until they can find a place to cross the road. (Good luck with that on fast 68!)

PLEASE REPORT such conditions as these pictured today on southbound Olmsted Rd, Monterey at CA SR 68 intersection. BTW, in past 3 weeks, this is at least the 3rd such issue at this intersection—on at least 3 of 4 sides.

WHERE TO REPORT re: California highways and other roads in Monterey County. bikemonterey.org/where-to-repo

I talked to my daughter, Kelly, who lives in #Pasadena and was able to return to her house on Friday, 01/10/25, with her dog, Nick. She told me a few interesting things:

#Altadena just two blocks north of her house burned down but her house and the immediate neighborhood was spared because the wind shifted as the fire advanced from Altadena to #Pasadena.

She said that people are patrolling the streets asking people if they need any help.

She said the police were out protecting abandoned properties and while there was one case of a person looting houses, the person was quickly chased away.

She said, the support, compassion, assistance and kindness were ubiquitous.

She said she is in the process of cleaning up her yard and house and is very happy to be back home.

She said that people who work for #Caltrans like she does who were evacuated are given 5 days of leave with pay for personal business.

I said, "It's interesting that what we see on the news is all #tragedy and decimation but there are fewer stories of the #strength and #resilience of people to pull together and take care of each other in times of great need."

The moral of the story, at least for me, is that when great tragedy strikes, human beings instinctively, reach out to help and be helped.

My favorite story about Mr. Rogers, is the one he told about his mother saying to him, "Freddie, if you're ever in trouble, look for the helpers."

There are many helpers among us but with our amygdalas attuned to threat, we, as homo sapiens, have a negativity and threat bias. But when the prefrontal cortex clicks online we find #kindness, #empathy, #compassion, and the intense desire to help and assist our fellow human beings.

As the Beatles sang, "We'll get by with a little help from our friends."

As a Social Work psychotherapist one of the key components of my assessments and service plans is "who can you turn to when you're really down and out?" Of course, I don't want to hear, "There, really, is nobody." And then I realize that is why they have called for an appointment and they are talking to me.

As a Social Work Psychotherapist I am over and over again surprised that as human beings what we want more than anything is to have someone who is there for us and knows our fear, pain, sadness. We want what Alice Miller called "an enlightened witness." With all the deprivation and pain, our biggest fear is abandonment, to be left alone vulnerable.

It doesn't seem like much, but to be a non anxious presence and willing to become part of a person's moral support system is a huge gift, "precious", as Michael White would say.

"Freddie, look for the helpers."

Here I am. Where does it hurt? What do you need?

CA RxR 3.05p2: I-5: San Diego to Los Angeles (Part 2) caroutebyroute.org/2024/12/30/

The second part of the podcast on the segment of I-5 from Mexico to Downtown LA is now up (this is the former US 101 portion). This evening, we're recording the next episode, which will cover the rest of US 99 in Los Angeles, as well as the ridge route. I've also been working on writing the US 6 episode, which uncovered some interesting stuff related to the routing in the Newhall Pass (as well as making me realize that Balboa was once routed up Jollette to Meadowlark to Sesnon back to where it is now). Fun vacation!

#Caltrans / California Dept of Transportation

Caltrans fail. Half-baked job. Crew likely rushing to get home Christmas Eve. Still, hazard remains.

Update on our Dec 20 report to #Caltrans re: CA SR 68 eastbound near Olmsted Rd (sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1136):
Caltrans responded Dec 24, saying situation would be addressed, then later that day, saying situation had now been addressed, so they were closing report ticket.

That made it necessary to submit new report Dec 27, after we biked same spot & saw Caltrans had only picked up larger car parts.—Sharp debris remains, as new photo shows.

We went to nearby Caltrans District 5 office to show pics firsthand. As razor-wire atop fencing shows, they don’t appear to welcome visitors. So we submitted another report. BTW, 1st rpt took <10 mins; 2nd took much longer due to apparent tech glitch Dec 27 with use of required map function.
