"This year marks 20th year for the Fuller Center for Housing and 17th year for the Center’s Bicycle Adventure ride, but first time the trip came through #Salinas Valley, as #BigSur highway closures meant an inland detour was necessary….St. Mark’s Episcopal Church provided overnight shelter for the group so they could get rest and eat in #KingCity."

“'These farmlands are fascinating, and I will never look at a jar of strawberry preserves [the same] again,” said Andy Simpson, who... had never before seen #agriculture on the scale of #MontereyCounty fields. 'The wonderful workers doing this are amazing.’

"“When you ride a bike across country and stay in #churches, you live a very simple existence,’ Asmuth said. “You realize how little in life you need to be truly content.’"

Ophie was known and loved by the bike community as part owner of Winning Wheels Bicycle Shop in Pacific Grove 1986-2024. Some were unaware of her many other talents, e.g., “her patience and kindness with the children earned her the Anne Sullivan Award – a county-wide peer nominated award for educators who exemplify compassion and guidance with children with disabilities.” Learn more about Ophie: dignitymemorial.com/obituaries

From David Schmalz of #MontereyCountyNow, in his update about #MontereyCounty’s #FortOrdRegionalTrailAndGreenway / #FORTAG: “Watson articulated something I’ve observed, but never put to words. 'People’s capacity to be active and involved in the community comes in cycles.’” montereycountynow.com/blogs/op

This is how bike community works!

Something that made our 💖 heart sing today: Receiving a photo of a Salinas Valley dad who’d had no bicycle, now riding our old Giant hybrid, which we were no longer using.

And likewise, other of his family members who’d had no bikes are now enjoying the used bicycles donated by a Carmel resident who contacted Bicycling Monterey because their family had bikes they were no longer using. (They found our post bikemonterey.org/where-to-dona, and we were happy to connect them with an appropriate recipient.)

"Monterey County Agriculture is a $4.3 billion-dollar economic sector that depends on 55,000 farmworkers to harvest our crops each year, primarily immigrants; some have resided in our communities for decades.
Our nation’s fresh food supply and local economy are fully dependent on this workforce, and we consider this a #NationalSecurity priority in a time of agricultural labor shortages.” —#MontereyCounty Farm Bureau montereycfb.com/immigration-re
