What a fabulous day out at WWT Slimbridge with two of the Exeter Daves; highlights were the White-spotted Bluethroat, Temminck's Stint, male Garganey and Ruff. Happy days.

Day 22 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Black-tailed Skimmer, seen from an unusual angle, looking down at one sunbathing on a low fence. The green eyes distinguish it from the related Keeled Skimmer from this angle where the colour of the abdomen is harder to see. Herring gull and coot chick.
When I was at #slimbridge a few weeks ago, I witnessed a herring gull swoop down onto a coot's nest and pluck out a chick. It then carried off the baby coot and stopped in front of a group of visitors, myself included and swallowed the chick. It was very sad to watch, but unfortunately chicks are frequently predated by a variety of animals.

One of my favourite photographs from 2016- this one was taken at Slimbridge Wetland Centre. The swan pictured here is a juvenile, a cygnet, that's why the feathering is grey rather than white.

White-spotted Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica cyanecula) was the star of the morning - fantastic views of this smart male. Fabulous and uplifting to see. Even the elegant Black-winged Stilt and Avocet couldn't match it!

Sleeping away the afternoon. This is Britain's smallest breeding duck. They're normally quite shy, so I've not managed a good photo of the ones in Stockport, but this one was not bothered by being right next to a hide.

One of the Daves and I made the trip up the M5 today to WWT Slimbridge. We had a great day out and saw 46 species of birds including Common Crane, White-fronted Goose, Bewick Swan and the White-rumped Sandpiper (a rare visitor to the UK).
