The landscape surrounding Silverton, Colorado, is extravagant enough without the fall colors. But autumn turns it luxurious.

Fall is quickly approaching. I can't wait to explore the San Juans once again in all their autumn splendor.

This is the time of year I start thinking about camping on top of mountains! May and June can offer windows of opportunity between the avalanche danger of winter and lightning danger of summer. Here's a couple epic high camps in the #moonlight above 13,000 ft. in the #SanJuanMountains, #Colorado.

Here's the town of #Ouray, #Colorado smothered in fresh snow as the peaks 5,000 vertical feet above town still catch the dusk alpenglow. Easy to see why this place is called the "Switzerland of America". From December 2012. #SanJuanMountains

#Colorado (and much of the western U.S.) is in the midst of an "atmospheric river" winter storm that has dumped 2-3 feet of snow across Colorado so far. This morning Mount Sneffels made an appearance during a brief break in the storm. #SanJuanMountains #14ers

Precarious (2022)

July 4th hike, Mount Hayden trail from Ironton, about 15 minutes south of Ouray. Ironton is a ghost town at 9800' in elevation.

This is a steep trail. I'm generally in shape, but not in top "hiking" shape... not around here.

Still I did make it over 12,000', above treeline and in the tundra before I ran out of juice.

A stand of golden aspen trees catches rays of light from the morning sun as it rises above the Needle Mountains on the southern approach to Molas Pass Summit.

The San Juan Mountains in Colorado are an ecological gem! With habitats ranging from alpine tundra to dense forests, they support diverse wildlife like black bears, elk, and the rare Canada lynx. Snowmelt feeds streams and rivers, vital for plant and animal life.
