#MiamiBeach mayor’s censorship of ‘#NoOtherLand’ is yet another authoritarian move to shield Israel

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner's call to strip a local movie theater's funding and lease over showing the film "No Other Land" is just the latest #authoritarian example of how the U.S. government is attempting to censor criticism of Israel.

By Nikki Morse and Donna Nevel, March 18, 2025

"Mayor Meiner has now introduced a resolution that, if passed, would revoke local art house movie theater O Cinema’s lease and withdraw more than $40,000 in city grant funding. The resolution is being introduced this week at the Miami Beach City Commission meeting for a vote. Opposition has been fierce, and it is coming from different perspectives. While all those opposing the resolution rightly describe it as anti-democratic, unconstitutional, and a violation of free speech, some of those same people are condemning the movie and even calling it antisemitic. At this moment, we believe that it is crucial for groups in #SouthFlorida fighting for #Palestinian justice to be able to say loudly and firmly that this censorship reflects the City’s anti-Palestinian climate and history that we have been resisting at every opportunity. Oscar Winner Adra: "Why Couldn’t Claudia Roth Applaud Me as a Palestinian?" (The Third Draft - Hanno Hauenstein, 2025-03-15)

“Over the past year and a half, I’ve traveled to Palestine and Israel four times, met with the filmmakers of No Other Land, and moderated panels on the film in Jerusalem and Berlin – some alongside its protagonists. More often than not, these discussions were overshadowed by the political firestorm the film ignited in Germany. The message from major officials to the filmmakers was unmistakable: Your perspectives are not welcome here.”

“while No Other Land’s Oscar win was unexpected, its rejection by the U.S. film industry was just as telling. Despite glowing reviews, no American distributor picked it up. Beyond select screenings, the film remains largely inaccessible to U.S. audiences.”

“The Oscar win for “No Other Land” for best documentary ought to have been a triumphant moment for Palestinian and Israeli cinema and society — a rare instance in which artists from both communities stood on the world stage together to receive acclaim for a film they made together. “

#NoOtherLand just won an Oscar. But while its protagonists were celebrated in Hollywood, the backlash they faced in Germany is now weaponized to silence the film in the U.S.<<
