Something I realised over the weekend, I have an unprecedented amount of nostalgia for #MarioKart64
Is it a good game? For the time, yes. Playing it now, it certainly feels like it is held together with hopes, dreams and mushrooms.
I forgot how aggressive the rubber banding can be for the AI. Not only that, but they also super accelerate way into the lead with little hope to catch them.
There are clearly some processor saving techniques being used. Like removing collision from drivers out of view range, allowing them to fly through the walls and floors of Bowser's Castle.
I also noticed the AI doesn't seem to use shells as weapons, at least not that I had noticed, and I have recently sat through 50 to 150cc over the course of a couple of days.
Perhaps I am too used to the chaos of later Mario Kart games. But the 64 was just quite... quiet?
Still a reasonably fun time, but I feel the nostalgia goggles definitely cloud the judgement on this one.
