"For Melancon, the garments he designs and wears for the Young Seminole Hunters double as research projects that blend history with contemporary art. References to Kerry James Marshall and Barkley Hendricks are literally and symbolically interwoven with pivotal moments in Black and African history — from the Amistad Rebellion of 1839 to the story of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia."

"Iko Iko" is a #muchcovered #NewOrleans song that tells of a parade collision between two tribes of #MardiGrasIndians and the traditional confrontation. The song, under #theOriginal title "Jock-A-Mo", was written and released in 1953 as a single by #JamesSugarBoyCrawfordAndHisCaneCutters but it failed to make the charts. The song first became popular in 1965 by the #girlGroup #theDixieCups, who scored an international hit with "Iko Iko". In 1967.

Continued thread

The Tribes of the Uptown and Downtown sections of the city have their "Super Sunday" parades on different weeks; there is also usually a West Bank Super Sunday in the Algiers neighborhood.

For those interested in the traditions and its history, I highly recommend the book "Jockomo: The Native Roots of Mardi Gras Indians" by John McCusker and Shane Lief, which has insightful informative text and beautiful illustrations.

New Orleans "Mardi Gras Indians" or "Black Masking Indians" have long traditions, with new suits first appearing on Mardi Gras Day and formerly the last appearance on St. Joseph's Day - Later, the Sunday closest to St Joseph's Day became known as "Super Sunday" when there would be a daytime parade of all Tribes.

John McCusker of the 1811 Kid Ory Historic House writes:

A persistent story repeated annually in NOLA at Mardi Gras time-that the Mardi Gras Indians got the idea for the tradition from the 1884-85 visit of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This 1879 clip quoting an Indian chanting "Jockomo" should put that trope to bed. Other image is a pen and ink drawing from 1875. Note the Indian chief bottom left.
