@Snoro Citizens from around the world are increasingly holding governments and businesses accountable for their #greenhousegas emissions by filing lawsuits that frame climate change impacts as human rights violations, according to a recent episode of Mongabay’s Against All Odds video series.

César Rodríguez-Garavito, chair of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at New York University’s School of Law, who’s featured in the video, says the climate movement has seen

#Earth's #atmosphere hasn't had this much #CO2 in millions of years
New data shows CO2 levels have broken through 430 parts per million, an indication that human-caused #globalwarming will continue to warp the environment
For the first time, global average concentrations of #carbondioxide, a #greenhousegas emitted as a byproduct of burning fossil fuels, exceeded 430ppm in May. The new readings were a record high and represented an increase of more than 3ppm over last year

#Google undercounts its #carbon #emissions, report finds
Research says Google’s #carbonemissions went up by 65% between 2019-2024, not 51% as tech giant claimed
Between 2010, first year there is publicly available data on Google’s emissions, and 2024, Google’s total #greenhousegas emissions increased 1,515%, Kairos found. Largest year-over-year jump in that window was also the most recent, 2023 to #2024, when Google saw a 26% increase in emissions between 2023 and 2024.

#Earth is trapping much more heat than #climate models forecast – and the rate has doubled in 20 years
Burning of #coal, #oil & #gas has added more than two trillion tonnes of #carbondioxide and other #greenhousegas to atmosphere. These trap more and more heat, preventing it from leaving. Some of this extra heat is warming the land or melting sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets. Fully 90% has gone into oceans due to their huge heat capacity...

#Forests can sequester large amounts of the global climate-influencing #greenhousegas CO2, important especially in times of #globalwarming. This is provided, of course, that these forests themselves can withstand the #increasingtemperatures. Authors, A. C. Rice & R. E. Froese (2024), Incorporated #climateadaptation into a #forestmanagement plan in Michigan (USA).

#Tech giants' indirect #emissions rose 150% in 3yr as #AI expands
#Indirect#missions include those generated by purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by a company. Amazon's operational carbon emissions grew the most at 182% in 2023 compared to three years before, followed by Microsoft at 155%, Meta at 145% and Alphabet at 138%, according to the report. The ITU tracked the #greenhousegas emissions of 200 leading digital companies between 2020 and 2023.

#California’s ability to set tough #emissions standards dates back to 1970, when heavy #smog clouded the skies of #LosAngeles. Since then, the #state has received dozens of waivers allowing a range of policies to reduce #pollution & #GreenhouseGas emissions. #AirQuality has improved, but remains poor in some regions, particularly in the CentralValley. #State leaders see the transition to #electric #cars as a tool to improve it.

Repealing #California’s automobile policy is central to #Trump’s agenda of bolstering the production & use of #FossilFuels in the #US, while eliminating policies that promote #RenewableEnergy & reduce planet-warming #GreenhouseGas #emissions.

Trump’s action reversed a #Biden decision that allowed the #state to require that #EVs make up a progressively larger share of new vehicles sold in California until 2035, when the state would ban the sale of new #gasoline-powered #cars entirely.
