Are you fucking kidding me?
Jack Dorsey is a main track speaker at FOSDEM this year:
https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-4507-infusing-open-source-culture-into-company-dna-a-conversation-with-jack-dorsey-and-manik-surtani-block-s-head-of-open-source/
I am at a loss of words. I also owe sincere apologies to everyone flagging issues with FOSDEM over the years, whose concerns I often somewhat minimized. I am sorry, you were all right and I was wrong.
FOSDEM is now explicitly platforming AI/blockchain bro fascists.
In case anyone is confused as to why platforming Jack Dorsey is a problem, go listen to this Tech Won't Save Us episode:
https://techwontsave.us/episode/228_jack_dorseys_embrace_of_crypto_libertarianism_w_david_gerard
Lol, of course there is immediately a sealion in the replies, asking polite questions about why would letting Dorsey speak at FOSDEM be an issue, and why would anyone not like Dorsey after he supported decentralized networks like Nostr.
Profile: Bitcoin developer, "working on web monetization", Nostr address.
[shocked picachu face]
So about Nostr:
> Jack Dorsey gave $10 million to an anonymous founder with a deep devotion to a fascist 'guru'
@rysiek I saw multiple posts complaining about a bilionaire speaking. I was confused by that.
I think it had better be highlighted that people have a problem with a fascist speaking. Then it's more clear that there is a problem.
@jschwart I mean, platforming a billionaire is already bad enough in my book
@rysiek that could well be, but in these cases I care a billion times more whether somebody is a fascist or not than whether someone is a billionaire or not ;)
@jschwart oh absolutely, no question about that. Communicating clearly about this is obviously a very good idea.
@rysiek Shouldn't be hard to find something reportable in these shitheads' post histories. Get them off the fedi and back to their circlejerk on Nostr.
@ljrk @rysiek The distinction I'm making is that we're here because we want to have positive community, share things were cresting, build systems to protect one another, etc. We don't need or want them here.
But they depend on trying to hurt us to have a good time online. That's why, despite being on their disgusting nazi coinbro thing Nostr, they're also here. The circlejerk analogy is that they're stuck settling for each other's miserable company when they want to be screwing us.
@dalias @ljrk
how is calling a person who you have never interacted with nor know (me) a “shithead” part of a “positive community”?
How did me asking another person a question “hurt” you?
In my world and in my fediverse horribly insulting others is not part of a “positive community” which can interact with each other in a decent way.
@dalias
I am the person who asked those questions. And I really wanted to understand. I care about events like FOSDEM and don’t know much about Dorsey and the problem here.
So why do you call me a shithead?
And please show me something “reportable” in my timeline where I post something unacceptable.
When did we loose to have a conversation among people who don’t know each other?
What do we expect when we insult people who we don’t know as “shithead”?
@bumi If you have values opposed to the very existence of people I care about, I really don't care to know or exchange ideas with you.
@dalias how do you come to the conclusion I oppse the existence of people?!
This is crazy. You have never interacted with me but want to know my values?!
@bumi Welcoming fascist funding VCs to our communities.
@dalias who? which VC do I welcome to the community?
I asked a question about FOSDEM…
@bumi And JAQing off isn't an excuse.
@dalias
where do I welcome him? I don’t even know much about him…
I asked questions, got some nice and helpful answers and links, learned details, …
and you come here and insult me for unknown reasons and then are unable to even comment on it.
and at the same time call it “positive community”…
@bumi I wasn't even talking about you, just Jack apologists in general. You @'d me and inserted yourself into a conversation that didn't involve you, then claimed you were wronged. By doing that, you proved you were an asshole.
@bumi Whatever I assumed about you, it's because you presented yourself as one of the Jack apologists "wronged" by us.
@rysiek
so this is how you react here on a question? I really appreciate your links and your time sharing what you know and what I don’t know (yet).
I don’t know Dorsey and didn’t care much about him. I care about FOSDEM and such events. And I really want to understand it.
I think you do not know me and my work and values. Maybe we might disagree on some things (I don’t know) but I assumed we can have conversations here and learn from each other.
