@FediTips I have a dumb question about following hashtags. If you are following a hashtag such as will you also see things posted with and or ?

In other words does following a root word help you see any compound hashtags that contain that word?

I didn’t see that covered in the explainer but maybe I am blind 😉

@lrreynolds

No, it just shows the specific tag you followed. If you want to follow related tags too, you need to follow them separately.

This is why it's also worth using multiple related tags on posts, so it covers lots of people's follows.

@lrreynolds @FediTips

No, you will have to follow all three. It would be "interesting" (meaning complex and error prone) to allow fractional hashtag following.

Also even when you follow a hashtag you don't necessarily see all posts *of* that hashtag, in part because your server may not be federating with a server where a user is using that hashtag.

This is also challenging.

@ChuckMcManis @lrreynolds

You can solve the federation thing by following a group as well as a hashtag. Groups federate all of their posts to everyone that follows them, no matter what server they are on:

@FediTips @ChuckMcManis this is interesting but you need to discover the group and then understand how to follow it.

Hashtags seem way easier for new users to understand as a means of discovering interesting content. Too bad they seem limited in their effectiveness…

@lrreynolds @ChuckMcManis

For Guppe at least, you can create a group by just mentioning it, just like with hashtags.

Of course this doesn't mean everyone is following the same group or hashtag, but it's a similar situation.

@FediTips @ChuckMcManis @lrreynolds

when I tried to look into a few of these, they seemed like placeholder accounts or the content wasn't on topic..

Is this still a work in progress?

@RueNahcMohr @FediTips @ChuckMcManis not sure what you are referring to? What accounts are you talking about?

@lrreynolds @FediTips @ChuckMcManis

Two I thought might be interesting were transformers and ... anyhow the other one had no posts. transformers had no transformers :/

@lrreynolds @FediTips @ChuckMcManis

meh, nevermind, it took 20 minutes of scrolling and reading to find them....

@ChuckMcManis @FediTips thanks, that’s too bad but what I assumed. It would be nice to allow fractional tags to show up in your feed.

I agree if you are trying to be discovered it’s best to use several hashtags rather than one more specific one.

I know some great content producers like @ChuckPfarrer who have begun posting content and I told him to use hashtags but that may not even work because his server is very new.

@lrreynolds @ChuckPfarrer

I don't disagree, but you will find as you explore the fediverse that sometimes there are other hashtags that 'match' your fragment which are not hashtags you wish to follow.

Further, some posters don't use hashtags that expose them to an audience that might be hostile to their point of view.

And finally you are in control! You can (and should) follow people you want to see in your timeline and boost their posts!

@ChuckMcManis @ChuckPfarrer yep understand all that. This is about helping new content producers who have a big following on other platforms come to mastodon and attract followers here by posting good content and being discovered by a large segment of users. I certainly boost but I am not a social butterfly with a big following of my own.

If this doesn’t get improved I’m afraid we won’t get the the big content producers making the switch as fast as they might otherwise.
