@FediTips I have a dumb question about following hashtags. If you are following a hashtag such as will you also see things posted with and or ?

In other words does following a root word help you see any compound hashtags that contain that word?

I didn’t see that covered in the explainer but maybe I am blind 😉

@lrreynolds @FediTips

No, you will have to follow all three. It would be "interesting" (meaning complex and error prone) to allow fractional hashtag following.

Also even when you follow a hashtag you don't necessarily see all posts *of* that hashtag, in part because your server may not be federating with a server where a user is using that hashtag.

This is also challenging.

@ChuckMcManis @lrreynolds

You can solve the federation thing by following a group as well as a hashtag. Groups federate all of their posts to everyone that follows them, no matter what server they are on:

@FediTips @ChuckMcManis this is interesting but you need to discover the group and then understand how to follow it.

Hashtags seem way easier for new users to understand as a means of discovering interesting content. Too bad they seem limited in their effectiveness…

@lrreynolds @ChuckMcManis

For Guppe at least, you can create a group by just mentioning it, just like with hashtags.

Of course this doesn't mean everyone is following the same group or hashtag, but it's a similar situation.
