🧵 #AileenCannon's pro-Trump ruling to dismiss his document theft case highlights one of the biggest mistakes made by the American left: They thought that the legal system was inherently favorable to them, not realizing that judicial rulings are just legislating by other means.

Not realizing how political #law is, they utterly failed to stop Republicans from stacking the courts with automatons.

@mattsheffield @AnnaKennard I agree 100% We are 35 years behind Leonard Leo and the Federalists and the Dems have no one else to blame but themselves

@lawyersgunsnmoney

*we have no one else to blame but ourselves

I figured this shit out in 2011 and I was DECADES behind.

No cookie for me.

@SatelliteOfLove No cookie for the Democratic Party, who never made the courts an issue, never explained why the courts are important and never, to this day, came up with even a plan to counteract Leonard Leo and his billionaire sponsors. Leo is a billionaire himself at this point. Lawrence has talked about this. No one in the party did anything

@lawyersgunsnmoney @SatelliteOfLove Interesting thing to wander across my dash

the democrats spent two solid decades talking about the courts in campaigns

easily two decades

year in, year out, court appointments court appointments court appointments

to relatively little effect, unfortunately

they talked about it so much that people were completely sick of it and bitching about it constantly, even as they were being proven right

the idea that the democratic party "never made the courts an issue" is so batshit removed from the actual history that I'm like "are you from the berenstein universe"?

@moira @SatelliteOfLove Lawrence said exactly the same thing-so I think I’m in the correct universe. There is not now any Dem organization or push equivalent to what Leo has done. So I stand by my statement

@lawyersgunsnmoney @SatelliteOfLove Why would you believe someone who has dedicated their entire life to destroying the centre and left in general and the Democratic Party in particular about history of the Democratic Party?

_I was there_, okay? Not in the party, I've never been a member - just seeing it. Year in and year out. And amplifying it myself. It was continual, and I know that because _I was there seeing it happen and talking about it_.

It was _real specifically_ in the context of protection Roe v. Wade and abortion rights.

And people continually ignored it and laughed it off. Not everyone of course, but more than didn't.

I was there, and Leonard Leo is a professional fucking liar.

@moira @SatelliteOfLove I’m still not sure what your point is. I was there too - back in the 80s when Leo created the Federalist society and installed them at every law school in the country and then took over George Mason law school. Do the Dems have their own law school? No. Do the Dems have an equivalent counter org to the Federalists? No. Do the Dems have billionaires backing their org like Harlan Crowe? No.

@lawyersgunsnmoney @SatelliteOfLove Because they already had the kind of judges they needed.

There's no need to create a new framework for judges when you're already getting the kind you want, who - as you see it - interpret the law in a modern and lawful way. The entire point of the Federalist project was to create a new class of judges with far-right philosophy.

Why would you create a second, partisan, parallel channel that would ignore the law and rule how your party wants when your philosophy is directly opposed to judges like that, even if on y our side?

Besides, what I was responding to was "the Democratic Party, who never made the courts an issue." Which is bullshit. They did. For decades.

@moira @SatelliteOfLove I call bullshit and your replies indicate that you are a troll if not misguided in the extreme making factually inaccurate statements. You’re attributing views to me which are inaccurate at best and not responding to my points.

@lawyersgunsnmoney @Npars01 @SatelliteOfLove They did. Purist leftie voters scoffed at them and used the warnings as another excuse not to vote for Dems. So we got eight years of Bush and four years of Trump, as well as Repub obstruction for most of Clinton’s and Obama’s Presidencies.
