There are lots of ways you can use on the Fediverse:

-Follow any Mastodon account's public posts through RSS by putting .rss at the end of their profile URL. Use this address in your feed reader software.

-Follow any PeerTube account or channel by clicking the options menu next to the Subscribe button and selecting RSS.

-If you are on a Friendica server, you can use it as a feed reader. Paste an RSS feed address in the search box, that feed's posts will appear in your home timeline.

p.s. If you're wondering what the heck RSS is, there are a couple of excellent videos about it on the Fediverse:

@feditips Yep! Most Fediverse platforms offer an RSS or Atom feed, though not all of them make it easy to find.

I've collected a list of the patterns used by various server types here:

But adding .rss like on Mastodon is always a good place to start!

(Fun fact: Mastodon lets you follow tags with RSS too!)

Hyperborea Tech Tips · Finding Fediverse FeedsHow to find the RSS/Atom feeds for Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Misskey, and other Fediverse platforms.

@feditips @thelinuxexperiment @veronicaexplains I used to run a website that collated rss feeds. A different site threatened me with legal action for linking to theirs. Really Simple Syndication it wasn't, but rss is excellent for news gathering.

@feditips I follow several webcomics with a variety of update schedules. Since many of them have RSS feeds, it provides a really good way to keep up with them when they update without having to remember all those schedules.

Vivaldi browser (free) has a really good built-in RSS reader. For Firefox, the Feedbro plug-in does a really excellent job (that's what I use). Similar plug-ins are available for Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers.

No connections, just a user.

@feditips If you use Feedly all that's needed is the Mastodon URL no .rss

@Fedi.Tips #Hubzilla can be used as a feed aggregator/reader, too. And the channel source app can even automatically re-share articles coming in through certain #RSS feeds.

Not to mention that Hubzilla channels generate their own RSS feeds.

@feditips Is there an FOSS rss reader that syncs between devices without the need for self hosting? Feedly and Inoreader are the ones I generally use, but I really prioritize cross syncing between devices.

@arghya_333

Friendica does that as you will see the same feed on whichever device you log in on. It's not a traditional RSS reader, but if you follow RSS feeds they appear in the Home timeline.

There's currently no dedicated Friendica app, but it works with the Mastodon API so Mastodon apps should work with Friendica accounts. I'm not sure how the Mastodon apps handle RSS follows though?
