In case you missed it, Mastodon now lets you edit posts
You can edit any post you've made, and it will send a notification to people who have already interacted with it to prevent any hijinks or shenanigans. It also lets people see the previous versions.
You can access it through your server's website and some third party apps, for example iPhone/iPad app Toot! and Android app Fedilab.
(The official app doesn't yet support it, so it's another good reason to check out third party apps.)
@feditips But what you don't seem to be able to do (yet?) is add forgotten alt text to an image ...
@feditips Not sure that's a "bug", just "something that hasn't been done yet", perfectly normal for a software project ...
That's a great implementation. Edit button should be implemented only with post history visible to everyone.
Wikipedia does that, and it is very helpful, for 'hot topics' especially.
Happy that Mastodon got it right from the beginning.
@feditips I've noticed that when I edit posts, I cannot add image descriptions to the images. This is my primary reason for editing posts, especially cross-posted retweets from Twitter. I have to delete and redraft them to add captions.
Is this something that could be fixed?
@arancaytar @feditips As a work around, you can delete the image & reattach it to add an image description.
@arancaytar @feditips Oh great, eventually I'll be able to fix a typo in the alt text for an image I posted a couple weeks ago!
@feditips
I just went through trying to edit some posts on Android and Fedilab was the only open source app that I found that supported editing. So far it seems the best fediverse client I've tried
@feditips I sure would like to find the answer to this problem so I can start using a different app with these great features. I signed up for Mstdn a couple of weeks ago using the Mastodon app. Replied to confirmation email. Can’t log into browser or Metatext using this email. Should I start over on browser, creating a new account?
@feditips not seeing an edit button on Metatext either. When will the official mastodon iPhone app support it?
@NomadicNerd @feditips I noticed that the Metatext App does allow you to delete and redraft a post, (essentially a way to edit your original post without completely starting again) whereas the Official Mastodon App only seems to have a delete option.
Also I can pin a post to my profile using the Metatext App, but it doesn’t show or have the option again on the Official Mastodon IOS App.
@saenticott @feditips yeah I tend to bounce between the 2 but overall prefer metatext. Plus I get to #Toot lol
@feditips Thank you for sharing this!! I forgot my hashtags and was able to go back and add them. Awesome!
@feditips I think it's dependent on which version the server/instance is running, so this isn't universal. Mastodon v4.x, I believe, has post editing capability, so be sure to check your server's "About" section to see which version it's running if you're having trouble.
@feditips doesn't work on Tusky yet, either
@feditips Oh dear! I mean, the edit function is AWESOME, poor hand-eye coordination means I've used it a lot, hence "oh dear" for all those who've received notifications of all my typo fixes
@ronsboy67 @feditips Ahahah same! I'm new to Mastodon and didn't realize editing was also new... and I too am a frequent typo-fixer plus wording-tweaker... my deepest apologies to everyone
@ronsboy67 i had the same thought..not sure how that works
I hope i havent spammed followers with endless notifications
@OliverNoble It is an excellent solution though. Allowing innocent mistakes to be fixed while maintaining transparency fo those who have responded. If the edit is too extreme, responders can react as they see fit. Well done #Mastodon
@ronsboy67 yes it is a very good idea, essential
I need to investigate drafting and re-drafting toots before i post them
@feditips not in Metatext yet either
@feditips Just tested Toot! and it does! Hooray!
@feditips
Marvellous. Thank you!
@feditips Anyone feel like showing Jack Dorsey that this apparently wasn't that fucking hard?
@feditips : Or, rather than download a Mastodon app from app store, simply browse/login directly to your Mastodon account, via your mobile device browser app (e.g., DuckDuckGo, Chrome, etc.) That UI is excellent!
@feditips Oh sure. I can't manage to edit real things I write, but now I'm expected to go back and edit my Mastadon posts.
Next you'll be expecting me to proof-read and whatnot.
This is why Steve Earle went on heroin!
@Reverend_Blair @feditips I'm not sure I even understand from this post how to do it, so not a problem for me.
@Onceoday @feditips
My thing is that I don't want to do it. Did I spell, "Fuck" wrong again? Doesn't matter, y'all know what I mean.
Do I want to change the substance of what I said so I can deny being a dick? Fuck that, when I'm a dick, and it happens way more than I'd like to admit, I should wear that.
@feditips I don't like how it is currently. I want at least see, that message was edited (Full log would be even better). Trolls will appreaciate this feature
@feditips
I've been using fedilab at your suggestion. It has this feature. I'm loving it and reccing it to fellow Android users, btw. Thanks for the suggestion!
