Autism facts I did *not* know:

- The first person to ever be diagnosed autistic died *last year.*

- Autism and ADHD were considered fully mutually exclusive, in the DSM, until *2013*. And comorbidity thought rare for a while after.

- Research shows ~50-80% of Autistic folks show ADHD traits, and ~30-40% of ADHD folks show Autistic traits.

- The Monotropism questionnaire, which blows previous unified research and theories away, came out last summer.

Sources below.

Oh, and I didn't have room for colorful tone, such as:

- We Autistic folks tend to have significantly shorter lifespans, so Donald Triplett making it to 89 is impressive.

- Autism and ADHD have been considered mutually exclusive based primarily on one guys debunked theories from a while ago (this is so common 🙄)

- NONE OF THIS RESEARCH, THESE THEORIES, OR THE ENTIRE FIELD IS ANYTHING BUT EXTREMELY NEW AND BEING PROVEN INCORRECT CONSTANTLY.

@LaserMistress
On the one hand, I have made it to 71 years old, and on the other hand, my great-grandfather made it to 102, my grandmother to 101, and my mother to 94 before being killed by COVID in the nursing home, in which she was supposedly only temporarily being housed. So perhaps I'll beat 89... Just due to good genes.

@LaserMistress hm, monotropism does describe my behavior more accurately.

i have no attachment to ASD as a description of myself, i just want to reduce the suffering of the people that are close to me by giving them tools.

@LaserMistress

Thanks for mentioning Monotropism, I (unsurprisingly) scored rather high, but I liked and could strongly relate to the framing of the questions.

This one is also interesting, in case you get down reading about your “disability” (I was reading up on monotropism, but some of the autism research, even some very recent stuff, killed my buzz).

“autistic people had an IQ of 70 or lower compared to neurotypicals (7.5% compared to 2.3%), but also notice how 53.1% (37.3% + 15.8%) of autistic people in the autism register have an above-average IQ! Almost 16% of us have an IQ higher than 130, compared to 2.3% in the general population.”
(Dr. Natalie Engelbrecht, MSc, ND, RP)

Yes, IQ is rubbish, but so is all research still trying to diagnose neurodivergence as a disease that needs a cure, while by their very own measurements, most of us are smarter than average.

@LaserMistress thank you for the mention of monotropism. I had never heard of that.

It is too early to say what I will learn from it, but even as a concept it is useful.

@LaserMistress With such large overlap, and Autism being considered a spectrum disorder, it seems possible that at some point ADHD will become part of the ASD spectrum diagnosis.
