You don't have to use Mastodon to publish on Mastodon.

Mastodon is part of the Fediverse, and there are lots of other Fediverse platforms you can use instead.

For example, you can turn any independently hosted WordPress blog into a Fediverse server, and authors on that blog can be followed from Mastodon.

You can choose to display blog articles either in full, or as excerpts with a link, or just as links.

Another option is Friendica, where there's effectively no character limit on posts. It is also part of the Fediverse, and Friendica servers federate with Mastodon servers:

@feditips @fabeltjeskrant I don’t know about Mastodon, but my self-hosted Pleroma comes with a 5k character limit by default, and I’m sure I could increase it if I felt like.

The limit on Mastodon can be adjusted too, unfortunately the vanilla version doesn't make this very easy because they don't like people doing it.

Glitch and Hometown forks of Mastodon are much better for adjustable limits because they officially support them.

@feditips
We came from Fakebook and at first we lamented the 500 #characterLimit.

Now we like it.

We do thinks like combining posts sometimes but generally we see it as a service to others to try and keep things a bit tight.

We understand that Epicyon has a longer character limit, also. It has the added benefits of not requiring javascript and is designed to work with I2P network also with no fuss.
