I am thrilled that our update of the PB framework has finally been published.

Next to climate heating, the degradation of the biosphere's integrity and the poisoning of the environment with novel substances have reached new levels of risk.
A newspaper headline seen recently:-
"Nature is fighting back"
It's a dismal thought but James Lovelock's Gaia theory is proving to be accurate.
Our planet is fighting back, seeking to achieve equilibrium caused by the distortions we have brought about.
Therefore, many humans are dying through fire, water, war and pestilence and it will become worse until we face this reality and adjust our behaviour to work in harmony with our planet for its (and our) survival.
@W_Lucht I wonder how some people can still believe that we're not doomed.
@stemy
Because we're not. There is so much to fight for.
@W_Lucht Every hope i had about ecology encountered disillusionment, and climatic hope seems more than ever to be a blind faith similar as faith of God for religious people.
@stemy
I understand, but isn't that giving up when so much still it to be done? Should resistance be given up because chances seem slight? Is not a single species saved, person helped, cause improved better than saying "we're doomed anyhow"? At the beginning of the pandemic, it was a frequent finding that those feeling gloomy helped themselves best by doing something, helping, being in contact. Those things are real, not delusional. Going from bad to worse can still very much be prevented.
@W_Lucht I don't have anything specific to add to the conversation here, but I just wanted to thank you for the work that you do, especially given all the doom and gloom that one would see all the time in this line of work.
Spending the extra time as well to communicate about these issues and the developments here on Mastodon, we appreciate it.
Thank you.
@zabbeer
That's so kind of you to say! I think we all do important work, each in their field, in our own ways. But yes, these are monumental issues for our times. People still don't realize the extent to which the future, also the far future, will be shaped by what we do today.

"This planetary boundaries framework update finds that six of the nine boundaries are transgressed, suggesting that Earth is now well outside of the safe operating space for humanity.
Ocean acidification is close to being breached, while aerosol loading regionally exceeds the boundary.
Stratospheric ozone levels...

....have slightly recovered.
The transgression level has increased for all boundaries earlier identified as overstepped.
As primary production drives Earth system biosphere functions, human appropriation of net primary production is proposed as a control variable for functional biosphere integrity. This boundary is also transgressed.
Earth system modeling of different levels...

...of the transgression of the climate and land system change boundaries illustrates that these anthropogenic impacts on Earth system must be considered in a systemic context."
