listen, I've had my moments, but at least I've never mansplained Margaret Atwood's book to Margaret Atwood

@ElleGray @gleick Oh, to walk the Earth with this much self-confidence…

@ElleGray did she respond? Is there aftermath we can enjoy?

@piddlesworth @ElleGray

If only there was a link to the actual post. Then we could see for ourselves that this is real.

Edit: it is real. See post below.

@piddlesworth @ElleGray I can’t imagine Atwood replying - No point wasting time, getting into a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

@ElleGray Yep.

And her social media nik is her actual name!

@ElleGray I don't ever advocate suicide but the idea of committing seppuku when you cannot possibly regain your honour makes sense to me more, now.

@ianrogers @ElleGray

True. There are self-owns and then there is this.

@ElleGray Not sure if this was the inspiration for the SNL skit last night but it was hilarious. (Link is time indexed to Margaret Atwood) youtu.be/E1atbVu662s?si=4gIoni

@ElleGray
Cause we all know that christianity is comprised only of kind old grannies going to cute small countryside churches..

@SharkAttak @ElleGray
Jesus he knows me
And he knows I’m right

Genesis - Jesus He knows Me

@DeltaWye @SharkAttak @ElleGray

I know this wasn’t the main point of your comment, but that’s such a good song. Don’t mind being reminded of it.

@SharkAttak @ElleGray "Thanks for decent church-going women, with their mean, pinched, bitter, evil faces." - William S. Burroughs, "A Thanksgiving Prayer"

@kentenmakto @SharkAttak @ElleGray I listen to that every Thanksgiving. The laboratory aids part is a bit cringe, esp with covid but Reagan certainly was content to look the other way while millions died.

@ElleGray and the typos, I mean if you’re gonna be a complete shit online at least use autocorrect, or fucking edit.

@ElleGray
whoah!!! big mistake!! I wish I could have seen her reply because she really can hit back !!!!!

@SnowshadowII @ElleGray she didn’t need to. The dude was immediately dragged by more users than I thought were even still on Xitter.

I’m sure by the time she saw the post, all that was left to reply to was a small brown stain where he used to be standing.

@ElleGray that's an epic and definitely noteworthy effort 🤣

@ElleGray

😂☠😂 Thank you! I needed that laugh

If I weren't already following you I wd be now

Solidarity from Tacoma 🖖🏼🌊

@ElleGray And the funny thing is he deleted it and then added another comment that was just as ignorant. Proving, definitively, that he's an idiot.

@ElleGray I'm sure that, whatever Mrs. Atwood's response was, the other guy would reply "Well, it looks like you didn't understand your own work."

@ElleGray Proudest moment of my time on The Bad Place was when Ms. Atwood retweeted me.

@Plumbert @ElleGray

Mine too! My wife heard the yell across the house.

@chx @ElleGray what is this? Looks in the OP like a cone the vet puts on cats, here a bit different but still weird, I guess there’s some american context behind it?

@mirabilos @chx @ElleGray

Wikipedia links here saying: "The bonnets that handmaids wear are modelled on Old Dutch Cleanser's faceless mascot, which Atwood in childhood found frightening."

nytimes.com/2017/03/10/books/r

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hand

@mirabilos @chx @ElleGray you're welcome! It was news to me as well, your question prompted me to go find out.

@mirabilos @chx Margaret Atwood wrote a book called "The Handmaid's Tale" which was made into a tv show. These are the costumes the subserviant women wear (ie this photo means she's rebelling against the story's outcome by voting)

@chx

Left: Found that earlier on the bird site

right
cover of "the Scarlet letter"

@ElleGray

@chx @ElleGray

Don't bring campaign materials into voting booths, not pins, not maga hats. Really, don't.

@kevinrns @ElleGray this is of course a very sensitive issue but the maga slogan is the main slogan of Trump, the hats are sold in the Trump store. The Handmaiden costume while very obviously expresses a political opinion is not so closely related to Harris.

@chx @ElleGray

Of course, but nothing is gained, and risks and threats and confusion rise. Just don't. Wear a block away, or further if by law.

Reciprocity. Lower tensions.

@chx @ElleGray

Nope? As in "they are bad I can start fights in the voting station"

Please don't, it can disrupt voting, cause fights.

Its SUCH A BAD IDEA I now assume yourcaccount to be bad faith from Trumpists, purposeful attempting to get Harris supporters arrested, cause chaos at the voting booth. Create voting chaos news stories.

This is account is trying to start fights in voting areas, they work for Trump.

@kevinrns @ElleGray *slowclap* reporting and banning you

@DaniPanic @ElleGray Handmaid's Tale costume. The Handmaid's Tale is a novel by Margaret Atwood set in Gilead, a totalitarian and theocratic state that has replaced the United States of America. Because of dangerously low reproduction rates, Handmaids are assigned to bear children for elite couples that have trouble conceiving.

@chx @ElleGray i only saw the second picture without the first for context but yeah that... that makes sense

@ElleGray 🤷 There is a reason why Poland is called the Catholic Iran, sometimes.

Fundamentalists of all religions are a pain in the posterior.

Fundamentalists of a religion that happen to be in power aka the government, for decades in a country, make a country basically unliveable for normal people.

That's basically the difference between Christian nationalists in the US, they don't control the whole country yet, only parts of it, and Iran. 🤷

@ElleGray See also how Roe vs Wade being revoked has led to >200 prosecutions, and numerous pregnant women being denied medical care in red states. That's literally misogyny in the variant Iranian clerics practice, just early days.

@yacc143 @ElleGray

Yes. It is entirely possible both that she used Iran's anti-female legislation as a model for Gilead's because it was available _and_ that she thought it likely that Christian fundamentalists would do much the same—the commenter, I will guess, can not see that because he sees the two religions as being as fundamentally different as 'Divine' and 'Satanic', where to us it seems plain that they are both human constructions interested in doing much the same things.

@EmptySet @ElleGray
And we are back that different people have totally different premises and priorities.

Fundamental Christians in the USA, of course, will see their religion as special, the right thing, and everyone else are heretics.

Despite that a more relaxed, objective 3rd party would point out that fundamentalists of all religions have quite a bit of common properties.

@yacc143 @ElleGray
But Poland, like Ireland did, is moving away from that sobriquet as the old Communist megaliths die off.

@SaareMartha @ElleGray Well, Poland had a Church revival under the PiS.

@yacc143 @ElleGray
True but many Poles were disgusted and disturbed by this. That's backed off now under Donald Tusk.
