Reading several recent essays on the 'sentience' (& 'wood-wide-web') of trees demonstrates and emphasizes that the scientific community needs a serious discussion on anthropomorphism. #sciencecomm #plantsci #ecology
This whole thread feels like a good explanation of why #scicomm is important. If you send a research article directly at the general public, they're very likely to jump to all kinds of conclusions. Presumably, at least some of the people commenting have music grad school experience, but it doesn't seem to matter.

First day of a conference on #ScienceComm and social media at HumLab in Umeå, featuring @simonlindgren and @cfiesler, among others.
Lots of great stuff, such as @cfiesler's suggestion to write short blogs about one's own papers, both for outreach and for busy colleagues.
As I don't have a blog, I'm thinking of using Mastodon for that (I couldn't find two-way integrated macroblogging for the Fediverse), linking the threads on my website.
It would be nice to hear alternative ideas, though!
Welche Rolle spielen Videos in eurer wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation?
Erkenntnisse. Zum Beispiel vom DFG Symposium "Vision and Strategies for Reinforcing Additively Manufactured Concrete Structures" https://av.fid-bau.de/series/1084 - schaut doch mal rein! #ScienceComm #OpenScience #ConcreteStructures #FIDBAUdigital #TIB_AVPortal
Cool, accessible article over at #Aeon about the strangeness and complexity of atoms and their components, and how the popular idea that atoms are mostly empty space is problematic.
(The author mentions an episode of Cosmos in which Sagan says that, and which I remember vividly despite the decades in between)

"...since there is no scientific concept behind the “spillover”, it might be dangerous to base public health and public protection against future pandemics on it."
This is not just a rant on semantics. Science communication must be precise, now more than ever. 1/2

@lulu_powerful so, now you'll have to define #likelihood for us, please?
Friends, when you post those cool (scary) screenshots of multicoloured weather (smoke) maps, don’t forget to put a link to the page/app in there somewhere…
Same for great astro photos (that aren’t yours), shocking (predictable) revelations on politicians, new scientific discoveries, etc. I like to engage, and I always want more.

Currently reading another book on quantum physics that I can’t recommend to my father because it’s full of references to memes that he won’t get, and will find either silly or confusing. Not the first time.
Something to consider when you are writing a pop sci book and you are trying to make it accessible to all.
This needs hashtags, any suggestions?
