Nifty.

It however reeks of military applications.

NatureUAV-aided maritime communication over the Pacific Ocean using the elevated duct toward future wireless networks - Scientific ReportsTo bolster long-range maritime communication, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aid communications have garnered increased attention as traditional maritime communication solutions face challenges from geographical and meteorological factors. This work first introduces a UAV-aided wireless communication system based on elevated ducts, offering solutions for flexible accessibility, wide-area coverage, and extensive spectrum resources for maritime applications. Influenced by the tropical trade winds generated by semi-permanent atmospheric pressure systems, elevated ducts frequently occur over the northern Pacific Ocean, with a probability of occurrence as high as 94.07%. The study found: (1) the feasibility of realizing over-horizontal, GHz-bandwidth microwave transmission links within the elevated duct; (2) The path loss budget of 189 dB is marked with black isoline, implying that the receiver of the UAV-aided communication system in the ducting layer can receive and demodulate microwave signals with 1 GHz-bandwidth; (3) QPSK stands out for its relative compromise in bandwidth efficiency and hardware implementation difficulty for signals of six digital modulations. Compared to ground-to-air communication networks utilizing elevated ducts, UAV wireless communication systems can provide efficient support for maritime communications with minimal path loss and serve as a crucial component in 6G networks. The study represents a significant advancement in establishing a high-capacity data links platform capable of delivering high-speed, large-capacity, long-range wireless communications over the ocean without the need for relaying.

Today, on the solstice, this is the map from PSK Reporter showing my reception of FT8 stations on all HF bands over the last 24 hours.

I'm very chuffed to say I received DB0GVN in Antarctica on the 15m band at 19h30 UT, at a range of 13,465km due south.

Alex, DL2ALY is active from Neumayer III Station, IOTA AN - 016, Antarctica, until end of the 2025.

A good example here of either A) a pirate or B) sloppy QTH registration.

Why is there not more self-policing/error checking of the amateur radio contact reporting systems? Italian station IU4NLB is the station at fault - the locator is entered wrongly in the system as JD64. It should be JN64 or similar to be in Italy!

There are so many examples of this.

The 8m band FT8 radio beacon in Israel 4X1TI was heard by my receiving station in Plymouth (40.681914 MHz, distance 3,839 km), this morning at 10h50 UT.

Propagation conditions on the lower VHF bands should be improving significantly during the next few weeks, after the sun crosses the equator and energises the ionosphere in the northern hemisphere.

High pressure over northern Europe is bringing areas of "good" tropospheric radio propagation with it.

Tropospheric radio propagation increases the range of VHF, UHF and higher frequency signals thanks to "ducting" of the signals through temperature inversion layers in the lower atmosphere.

I installed a new antenna for transmitting on HF - a "Chameleon Basic 60" 60ft wire. It's the first time I've owned a full performance HF antenna with the aim of transmitting, so quite excited!

Looking at an almost direct comparison of FT8 reception on all bands between the Chameleon and my Youloop antenna, on consecutive days, the Chameleon is outperforming it very well!

The first image is the Youloop, 2nd image Chameleon (maps courtesy of PSK Reporter, receiver RX888 SDR).

The 8m band (40 MHz) has been open between S Africa and Europe this morning via FT8 mode.

The first map is of my reception of ZS3/V51PJ on 40.68049 MHz at -17dB, the second is of all stations' reception on the 8m band during the past 3 hours.

You can also see my current reception on all bands on PSK Reporter here:

The main Irish VHF proagation beacons will be OFF-AIR from today, 15 Feb.

From EI7GL: "For the last few years, the EI1KNH, EI0SIX and EI4RF beacons have been operating from a site to the south of Dublin with an excellent take off to the east towards the UK. Now due to a change of ownership of the site, the radio beacons will be turned off on Saturday 15th February 2025."

They should return once new sites have been organised. Read more here:

This is nothing special in the age of digital modes, and my receive setup is not particularly good, but I'm receiving VK6LG on the 40m band on FT8 mode. The receiver is a wideband RX888 SDR, fed from an Airspy Youloop.

I'm (almost) simulataneously receiving K0NZ in North Dakota on the 20m band.

I'm not particularly a fan of the digital modes, but I do find that they're useful for propagation monitoring.

You can see my FT8 monitoring via PSK Reporter:

Radio Propagation

As an area of high pressure is moving back into northern Europe and the British Isles this weekend, an associated area of "weak" to "good" tropospheric radio propagation tries to push in too. Enhanced radio conditions may reduce by the end of the weekend, although they may improve again later in the week.

Enhanced tropospheric radio conditions extend the normal range of VHF and higher signals beyond their normal range.
