This past weekend was the annual Museum of #Comic & #Cartoon #Art Festival, or #mocca #moccafest #moccafest2023 (something of a misnomer since The Society of Illustrators acquired it some years back & now no longer exists as a distinct museum). Sat I went w/my dear friend Baz & met up w/friend of >20 years James O. Smith III. Predictably I spent far more than was advisable, the causes of which you can see below, but I don't regret a single purchase; indeed, I wish I could have bought even more.

Making my intentions crystal clear: I will not be attending #MoCCAFest @ #SocietyOfIllustrators now or perhaps ever b/c of their disregard for #covid safety.
This is in lieu of having a long relationship with them and sending them, along with other establishments, this open letter that I penned, signed by 250+ people, in November 2022. It was ignored: forms.gle/xuGLqGqxMfdHdgg89

Google DocsAn open letter to organizers of comic shows, fests, trade shows, and book fairs re: COVID-19 safety protocolsEDIT: The form is closed--sending this along now. 263 signatures total! Thank you all so much! Hello, Marguerite Dabaie here. I'm a cartoonist concerned about COVID and would love to get signatures on this letter that I will then send to the organizers of multiple comics shows. This form will require an email to fill out, but only to verify that you're you. It only asks for your name otherwise, and this info will *only* be used as a name added to this letter. If you have questions or suggestions, please email me at mdabaie.vip@gmail.com Big thank you to Delta for bouncing ideas around with me, and Chris and Lisa for reading this over. --- As members of the comic and book-making community, cons, shows, and fairs are imperative to attend as part of our careers. Like all of us in our community, we had difficulties adapting to a world without these trade shows due to COVID-19–our networking and financial opportunities also dwindled. We are excited to see our favorite shows return and look forward to meeting our fans, friends, and colleagues again, face to face. However, while we wish to fully participate in–and celebrate–the return of these shows, we feel that many have relaxed the very important COVID safety protocols. Of particular note, New York Comic Con 2022 touted a masking mandate, but clearly did not enforce it, while other cons have had a more middling approach to mask usage. While some have put in the effort to employ a more effective masking rule, we feel that these can be applied more effectively and in many cases, can be appended with another measure to create a further safeguard. The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that wearing a properly fitted mask in public reduces the spread of COVID-19 and is the best way to prevent the virus from spreading. Two-way masking is more effective, instead of putting the onus of mask-usage on one person. It is also important to note that some–especially those who are fully vaccinated–will only experience minor illness. Others who may not have underlying conditions will develop long COVID, making up roughly 15%-20% of those initially infected, and in one study, 42% of long COVID sufferers reported only a “partial recovery” 18 months after infection. Reinfections can dramatically increase serious health issues. Many members of this community are taking the steps to protect ourselves from COVID for a number of reasons, including personal health conditions and/or disability, we are caregivers and do not want to pass the virus to our loved ones, we have long COVID and don’t want to exacerbate these symptoms, or we simply don’t want to put ourselves at risk. As it currently stands, many of us are apprehensive to attend comic shows because of what appears to be lackadaisical mask usage policies. Many decided to forego such events for the time being. But, as it appears that COVID is here to stay and it’s not becoming any less of an issue, we feel that a resolution should be made. Understanding that many shows do not have an ample budget or endless resources, we propose that show policies include at least one of the following solutions (with the caveat that if a mandate is in place, it will be enforced): Include an outdoor table area that concerned individuals can apply for. Designate a specific room of the show to be mask mandated and well ventilated, preferably near the entrance. Build specific hours/days into the schedule that are mask mandated. Allow acceptable egress to an outside space, permitting a person wearing a mask to feel comfortable to take the mask off to eat/drink. For panels, create well-ventilated overflow rooms for those who would prefer to not be in primary rooms for overcrowding reasons. Alternatively, offer the option to watch panels online. We feel that these accommodations are achievable and necessary going forward. If there is an interest in comics to truly make them accessible to all, a practical plan should be put in place to acknowledge that this is indeed still a virus that kills more people than the flu and can cause lasting organ damage. We love comics and we want this community to continue to thrive–and we want to be a part of it.
