Just published, #openaccess: Our introduction to the Convergence thematic issue on "Agency in a datafied society" (with Stephan Görland). In the introduction, on the one hand, we shed light on the intellectual risks of empirical and conceptual ambiguity. On the other hand, we discuss #agency between #humans, #machines and everything in between. #mediatization #ComAI #AI #artificialintelligence #datafication journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/

At the "Mediatization vs. #Datafication" conference in Lublin, we are discussing the use of #QSort in #mediatization research on the basis of a presentation by Szymon Zylinski. The possibilities here go far beyond #mediarepertoires and also concern the changing "structures of feeling" and #visualcommunication. We ourselves have developed MeSort, which is also #opensource: mesoftware.org/index.php/mesor This website is new to me: qmethod.org/resources/software

With reference to @odriessens presentation at the conference "Mediatization vs. datafication—Dialogues or competition?": In my view, the point is not that #datafication does not also mean a "research programme", but with a different scope than #mediatization research. The latter is concerned with capturing the interrelationship between the transformation of media and communication on the one hand and that of culture and society on the other from a long-term perspective.

The conference "Mediatization vs. datafication—Dialogues or competition?" in Lublin continues, including an interesting presentation by @odriessens on "Reconstructing #mediatization and #datafication into a productive research program".

The arguments I just made to relate mediatization research and #HMC more to each other come from this special issue of the journal HMC (with @goran_bolin, A. Guzman & @WLoosen) #automation #communication #AI #ComAI:

STARSMediatization and Human-Machine Communication: Trajectories, Discussions, PerspectivesAs research fields, mediatization and Human-Machine Communication (HMC) have distinct historical trajectories. While mediatization research is concerned with the fundamental interrelation between the transformation of media and communications and cultural and societal changes, the much younger field of HMC delves into human meaning-making in interactions with machines. However, the recent wave of “deep mediatization,” characterized by an increasing emphasis on general communicative automation and the rise of communicative AI, highlights a shared interest in technology’s role within human interaction. This introductory article examines the trajectories of both fields, demonstrating how mediatization research “zooms out” from overarching questions of societal and cultural transformations, while HMC tends to “zoom in” to approach the concrete situatedness of the interaction between humans and machines. It is argued that we need to combine both perspectives to better understand how the automation of communication transforms the social construction of culture and society. This article offers an overview of the key themes explored in this thematic issue, highlighting the productive intersection of HMC and mediatization within each article. Additionally, it identifies potential avenues for future research emerging from this fruitful intersection.

At the “#Mediatization vs. #datafication“ conference in Lublin tomorrow, I will give a talk on “Broadening the scope of mediatization research“, focusing on 3 theses:

(1) Datafication and the #automation of #communication are an inherent trend of deep mediatization.

(2) Communicative #AI is a phenomenon of societal communication—and therefore of society’s mediatization.

(3) We should expand the existing mediatization research of “consequence” with a mediatization research of “emergence”.

Our special issue of HMC on #mediatization and human-machine communication has been published, with many highly topical articles on communicative #AI, automated #communication and how it is changing culture and society. Edited with @goran_bolin, Andrea Guzman and @WLoosen. Alongside us, the authors are @idepounti, Autumn P. Edwards,@chadedwards, Leopoldina Fortunati,@cka, @giovannamas, @simnatale, Christian Pentzold, and @Palomaviejo. #ComAI, #HMC, ping @ICA_HMC

Interested in research on the transformation of #society with and through communicative #AI, #mediatization and #datafication? Do you want to do research at @zemki? Our call for the (paid) ZeMKI research fellowships has just started. The ZeMKI is an interdisciplinary research centre at the @unibremen with an innovative, interdisciplinary team. One of our current joint research topics is #ComAI. More information can be found here (application deadline: Feb. 18, 2024): zemki.uni-bremen.de/en/open-ca
