Scrub-Jay appreciator has entered the chat

California scrub-jay perched on feeder facing away from us. Aer tail is indeed very long, and also eventuated by the camera angle. Ae looks off to the left with a corvid dark strong beak. Aer body is blue and grey on the back and top of head, black around the eyes, and light under the chin and on the belly and pantaloons

Scrub Jay leans in and is in direct sunlight. Aer eyeball is visible, with brown iris and black pupil. It’s uncommon for the light to hit their eyes so they look like anything other than just dark black beads. Really neat to see eim like this!

Round borb! The scrub-jay has aer head pulled down close to aer body and aer feathers are somewhat flooded up. Scrub-jays often have longer and lankier bird physiques but here ae is in round borb mode and it is a delightful sight

I love how long scrub-jay tails are, and this photo catches the fascinating vibrancy of their feathers well.

Scrub-jay friend here says four.

I still think they’re the most punk rock birds

Feeder cam photo of a Steller’s Jay (Stellar Jay) perched on the edge of a mostly empty food dish. Aer body is a gradient from black to blue, the blue especially visible in this photo on aer tummy since ae faces us. Ae has a long large black corvid beak, and it catches the sunlight such that there’s a blue streak of reflection on it. Above aer eyes are two blue streaks on aer forehead. Not visible because the frame cuts off at the forehead is aer mohawk (crest).

Is this a purple finch instead of a house finch? If so, lifer!

Finch perched on a railing in 3/4 to us with head facing us. Ae has a vibrant dark red bead and chest, as well as some by the wings. Darker eyes and beak with brownish red purple stripey wing and tail feathers.

Some good chickadee moments

Dramatic red mustache and many prints over aer body—striped wings and googles eye chest in many browns and beiges. What a strange woodpecker.

Dark eyed Oregon coloration junco perched on the edge of feeder with beak partially open and full of seeds. Aer back is brownish and head dark charcoal with a wide cronching finch-like peach beak

The Flickers have mostly stopped standing in the food bowl, but they enjoy being quizzical about the camera.

The scrub-jays and titmouses are our most common visitors by far.

The junco are also common visitors, but they stay below the feeder picking at whatever everyone else has spilt.

Red shafted Northern flicker perched on the edge of a food bowl instead of in it. Aer beak is coated in snacks. Ae leans forward and looks at the camera. Aer head is mostly grey and the black collar and beginning of googles eye patterned belly is visible. Dark wide eye with some blush rust color eyeshadow in and near the beak.

Rear view for a scrub Jay about to take off. Aer long tail is very visible, blue on top, white into grey underneath. Because of the crouching aer bright pantaloons are barely visible, but the almost white belly is very visible

scrub-Jay steps into the feeder and crouches, aer lanky corvid body is now very very round, eventuated by the wide angle lens. Ae looks to the left and aer little black tufts under aer beak are extra visible. Aer white thin eyebrow-like feathers are also visible above aer eye and stretching along the side of aer head. Aer body is dark blue, neutral grey, light grey, and so round. So so round.

New species at the feeder! A Stellar Jay, if I may say so.

A steller’s Jay (though we do not like that name) perched on the feeder, leaning to one side, viewed somewhat from below. Aer body is vibrant blue, aer head dark corvid black. Sharp beak, adept feet, and the crown mostly pulled back and not visible from this under the chin angle.

The Jay has crouched down and aer crest is now visible, sharp and angular. Light thin contrast lines on aer forehead. Ae is mostly in shadow and looks rather goth/punk. Definitely the bird inspiration for my eldritch trickster rogue ttrpg character, who was prone to acts of “murderbeak”
