Parliament today approved the so-called Pushback Act. The bill was adopted as an exception law in the constitutional procedure with the votes of the governing parties, the Social Democratic Party of Finland and the Centre Party. The Left Alliance voted against the law.

The marginal changes made in committee do not change the big picture: the law is deeply problematic from the point of view of the rule of law in its basic solutions. By adopting the law, Finland is now making a conscious decision to reject its binding human rights obligations.

The Pushback law allows the Government to decide to block asylum applications on part of Finland's border. Asylum seekers would be prevented from entering the country or removed from the country without an application being received and without an appealable decision. The individual assessment at the heart of the right to asylum would be replaced by a 'quick encounter' in which a border guard would have to decide whether a person should apply for asylum after all.

The law, which erodes the rights of asylum seekers, also puts border guards in an impossible position. Border guards will be required to make potentially life-and-death decisions in a hurry. At the same time, they are being asked to violate human rights and EU law, which every civil servant has a duty to uphold.

The actions of an authoritarian Russia that disregards international law must be responded to. This does not require us to abandon our own rule of law, our constitution and our commitment to international law. Finland would have every opportunity to respond to the situation as a state governed by the rule of law, that is, by acting differently from Russia.

Fundamental and human rights that protect everyone and set limits to the exercise of power, the rule of law and an international rule-based system are in themselves the cornerstones of Finland's security. The Left Alliance will continue to defend these.

Parliament decided:

Finland will abandon human rights obligations.

The inability of several parties to stand up clearly and consistently for human rights and international law has led to such a mess that I don't know if very many people are keeping up with what is happening around the Refugee Act any more. Therefore, I will repeat a few points.

Firstly, the Refoulement Act is contrary to international law, EU law and the Finnish Constitution. The amendments tabled by the Administrative Committee do not change this fact. The government's proposal gives border guards the power to prevent asylum seekers from crossing the border and to turn back people who have already crossed the border. Asylum applications will not be received or processed, nor will there be any appealable decision. It is precisely these facts that are in conflict with the international human rights conventions binding Finland, EU law and our own constitution. It is therefore not possible to bring this proposal into line with international law by tweaking the details.

Secondly, the re-referral to the Constitutional Committee did not change anything. In yesterday's opinion, the PACE did not take a position on whether the proposal is compatible with international law. That train has already left the station, and the experts were unanimous: it is not. Nonetheless, the PeV issued an opinion that allowed the law to be passed. This new opinion does not take a position on the bill as a whole, but only on whether the amendments made by the Administrative Committee adequately reflect the corrections to legal certainty required by the Constitutional Committee in its previous opinion. Corrections are needed there too.

If this law goes through, it will set a dangerous precedent that will in future allow the curtailment of people's fundamental and human rights on the grounds of national security, which is precisely how the curtailment of people's fundamental rights has been justified in many authoritarian states. Finland should not join this group.

As a historian, I also feel obliged to point out that today's human rights treaties and practices were born after the Second World War, largely as a reaction to the nightmarish atrocities committed by Nazi Germany.

When right-wing politicians now say that such human rights are obsolete and that our national security is now more important, please think very seriously about what that means. Not just for asylum seekers seeking to enter Europe, but for all of us.

The caricature of Justice Minister Leena Meri (PS) has been in the media today. She alone has managed following deeds:

1. Dismantel the working group on racism that was to prepare an amendment to the Criminal Code to comply with the requirements of the EU's anti-racism framework decision. Minister of Justices wants hate speech to flourish, and with it a clearly more racist Finland.

2. Involved in the work of the working group on the independence of the judiciary. The working group is not allowed to draft its proposal in the form of a bill. The setting up of the working group was prompted by developments in the EU and Finland, particularly in Hungary and Poland in recent years, where the regime has eroded the independence of the authorities and made them loyal to itself. The Minister of Justice therefore wants the Finnish parties to be able to influence the decisions of the courts. Yes, as in Nazi Germany or modern Russia.

3. Prevented the criminalisation of Holocaust denial. Yes, you read that right, our Justice Minister wants the six million Jews massacred by the fascists to be called a lie. Consider the reasons for that.

These three grisly things are only from today, there will be more tomorrow, if the opposition fails to stop this madness with an interpellation.

Everyone should keep their eyes open now, especially as the coalition has de facto handed the prime minister's job to Purra. Orpo is watching from the sidelines, as a bothered political mitten. Oh Finland, what a cancer you have given yourself. Let's hope a new government based on Western values can be formed soon!

Many people have been kicked out of the party on these occasions, but the frequency of excesses and worse says something. Personally, what I would have missed most of all now is a message from the party leaders to their own. That is, that they would be told by their own leaders how wrong and dangerous it is to act against democracy. The speeches were limited to a very good tweet by the party chairman and a couple of comments to the media.

But there has been no sign that the party's repeated linkage with extremism and violence is causing any introspection. That can only be done by the party membership, because the party as a party cannot control the opinions of its membership. But as one moderate said to me: 'Isn't that already the responsibility of the police and the judiciary? Let them do their job. There's no point in having a debate about that." There were many more less moderates.

When I've raised this issue on Twitter in recent days, the response has been overwhelming with anger, belittling and pointing out other faults. On this basis, there seems to be no desire or need among the party's rank and file and supporters to address these recurring situations. However, I refuse to believe that there are not a number of basic Finns who are concerned about the situation.

If it were just a case of old stories coming to the surface, I do not think the situation would be serious. Very often, people have come to power from the political margins, where their views have been wild, but have been reassured by maturity and the possibility of coming to power. Kekkonen was the champion of Greater Finland, the communists were revolutionaries, the radicals of the 1960s, starting with Tuomioja, were their own kind. As such, the Halla-aholism could be part of such a continuum of pragmatic drift, but radicalism does not seem to have faded much in the party over time. What has improved is that the party leadership has become better at communicating separately to others and to its own.

As long as the Basic Finns drive the wagons into the ring in the face of outside criticism and defend their party from all and sundry, it is difficult to trust it to keep the undemocratic forces within it in check.

Fortunately, in a multi-party system, there is always the option of leaving the party without government power. But then again, that is for the other parties and their voters to decide.

My thoughts on the Basic Finns, terrorism and extremism:

The Basic Finns are currently largely responsible for Finland's internal security, as the party holds the portfolios of Minister of the Interior and Minister of Justice. It also has a significant security role in the Ministry of Finance. However, despite being such a key player in internal security, it emerged that a prominent member of the party, who is considered to be its security expert, is suspected of making illegal threats with terrorist intent. This is about fake bombs sent to the party offices.

The leadership of the Basic Finns Party is balancing external demands with internal integrity. As such, this is entirely to be expected from a radical populist party in a multi-party system. A good example of this balancing act was the way in which the party's ministerial elections were handled.

Normally, the party leaders are the first to be elected as ministers. Now two of the party's very popular vice-chairmen, Sebastian Tynkkynen and Mauri Peltokangas, have been left without a portfolio. Part of this was also the resignation last spring of the ID group in the European Parliament, which was largely made up of far-right parties friendly to Putin. At the same time, the BF's previously rather dense support base in Brussels was renewed.

The party leadership has therefore been at work in the background and its actions were certainly important in building the party's credibility in government. At the same time, the result of the first term of the Basic Finn' government is well remembered, when support quickly plummeted and contributed to the party's disintegration. Even now, support has fallen, but moderately.

The debate on racism in the summer and early autumn was largely born out of the fact that the actions of the people in the governing party, and especially the backgrounds of the ministers, carry more weight and therefore more interest.

None of the parties in government believed that they would benefit from the dissolution of the government; on the contrary, other issues were considered more important than the views expressed by the key players in the BF. It was the government programme and its importance that was often invoked.

The government programme states: ''The government recognises terrorism as a crime that seriously endangers the basic functions of society, the rule of law and human security. The threat of terrorism remains at an elevated level. Terrorism will be combated effectively." In the more concrete counter-terrorism measures, it is clear that the fight against terrorism has immigrants in mind, as better access to citizenship revocation in terrorism convictions is mentioned twice.

This is by no means the first or second case linking BF to extremism or even terrorism. Here are a bunch of others over the years:

The main suspect in Laden's terrorist crimes had a BF background, the attempted murder of BF member Kataja was the result of internal party disputes, the local branch chairman practiced shooting with a bow at a neo-Nazi summer camp with pictures of political decision-makers as targets, Junnila's KKK and Nazi flirtations, far-right Awakening seminars attended by party members, a local councillor ran a (Soldiers of) Odin clubhouse, BF councillor donated a Hitler watch to the Odins, BF MPs as speakers at the Kukkavirta event organised by the neo-Nazis, the entire youth organisation was expelled from the party for extremism, Hankamäki's book Truus kihottaa, the expelled MPs Hirvisaari and Turtiainen, the dominance of the leading figures of Suomen Sisu in the party, cooperation with the neo-Nazis in commemorating Schaumann, and then there were the various racism cases. Then there is a lot of other stuff, but the QAnon mentality of rank-and-file members or coronadenialism are not such important issues.

what is noteworthy is that these do not differ from the Basic Finn programs that much. only that Basic Finns hide their fascism *slightly* better.

THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE wants the Blue Black movement removed from the register of political parties. According to the ministry, Blue Black misled it by making its general programme illegal immediately after the association was recognised as a party.

The party is openly fascist and racist, even by its own admission.

The movement was registered in June 2022, after Blue-blacks, at the request of the ministry, amended their general programme to comply with the law and international conventions.

The ministry now accuses the party of cheating. The ministry has sent an application to the Supreme Administrative Court (KHO) asking for the annulment of its final decision.

Helsingin Sanomat reported on the birth of the Blue Blacks in its 5199 supporters story in June 2023.

The application for annulment is very rare, and the threshold for annulment of a final decision is high. Legal certainty requires that final decisions are not annulled on frivolous grounds.

This is why the Ministry of Justice cannot itself annul a decision, but only the CFI can do so.

The Ministry justifies its application on the grounds that the registration was made on the basis of "materially incorrect or materially insufficient information". The error has materially contributed to the registration of Blue Black Movement as a political party, the ministry argues.

According to the application, the ministry began asking about the general programme of the Blue Blacks during the 2023 spring parliamentary election campaign.

The party campaigned with similar demands, which the ministry had already found to be contrary to the law and international conventions during the registration process.

For example, the ministry had not accepted records that would have amounted in practice to prior censorship. The constitutional prohibition of prior censorship is at the heart of freedom of expression.

The Blue-Black movement would have wanted to interfere with freedom of expression by, among other things, stamping out 'what we consider to be harmful interference in public opinion'. The aim was to outlaw any speech that could be interpreted as being against Finnishness or heteronormativity.

The ministry had also reminded the movement of the prohibition of discrimination and equality. The movement's outline of an ethnic register, for example, had been problematic in this respect.

The new programme contained issues that had been rejected during the registration process. In the programme, the Blue-Blacks set themselves the goal of an "ethnically homogeneous Finland", the creation of an ethnic register and the "immediate review" of the right of residence of foreigners in the country.

The programme also mentions the eradication of "from our point of view" harmful dissent. This would mean, among other things, combating media content from Hollywood.

According to the MINISTRY, changing the general programme only four months after registration "deliberately contravenes the party law and shows a deliberate circumvention of the provisions of the party law".

The Ministry considers that it would be in the public interest to annul the decision.

What is said here, this is what the prime minister as well as the president of finland should be worried about.
