Sad times for Fyre Festival 2 ticketholders (any fediverse folk admitting to having splashed out?) as its founder Billy McFarland has announced the cancelation of the event. But some lucky person will get to buy the brand, which is now for sale. When our @CultureDesk posted about this, they (and commenters) pooh-poohed the idea of anyone wanting to invest in Fyre Festival. But we have an idea: How about @theonion.com purchases the name, makes merch, and donates the money to good causes. We’d certainly pay for a “I went to the Fyre Festival 2, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt” tee.

The Independent · Billy McFarland cancels Fyre Festival 2 and puts brand up for sale a week after postponementBy Kevin E G Perry

Is Fyre Festival 2 on or off? No one knows, though we'd put money on "off." NBC says the website was updated earlier today to say the festival was postponed. Shortly after that, the site was changed to say tickets are "currently not available." Billy McFarland, who went to prison for wire fraud and other crimes related to the first Fyre Festival in 2017, had claimed he was working with officials in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico to get permits, but the officials said there was no record of the event. No performers had been announced for Fyre Festival 2, which was scheduled for May 30-June 2, with ticket packages ranging from $1,400 to $1.1 million.

NBC News · Fyre Festival 2's fate up in the air after event says it won't take place at Mexican resortBy Erik Ortiz

We're not sure any fediverse folks have splashed the cash on Fyre Festival 2 tickets (did you also try and buy Graceland from that woman in Missouri?). But just in case you were tempted, the tourist board in the location where it's supposed to take place in Mexico says it "does not exist." Edgar Gasca, from the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres, said, “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it." The event is supposedly happening from May 30-June 2. Tickets went on sale last week priced from $1,400 — still with no confirmed musical performers or details on what will be happening. Here's more from the NME.

NME · Fyre Festival 2 “does not exist”, claim local tourism boardFyre Festival 2 "does not exist" according to an official statement from the tourist board in Mexico, despite the event claiming it is "real" on social media.

Tickets are now available for Fyre Festival 2, which will take place in May in Mexico. You'll pay between $1,400 and $1.1 million for a ticket, and in exchange you'll get ... no one really knows. The Fyre Festival site promises arts, cuisine, music, comedy, fashion, gaming, sports and "treasures," but no musical artists have yet committed to performing at the three-day event. Organizer Billy McFarland was jailed for four years for defrauding investors of more than $27 million after the first Fyre Festival in 2017. Here's more from @CBSNews.
