Andrew James Spooner
Re watching the 1980s Granada television adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. #JeremyBrett gets all the attention as a stellar Holmes, but #DavidBurke as Dr Watson is just as brilliant in a wonderfully understated way.

Brimming with warmth, but clearly an ex military man that can look after himself, you completely understand why Holmes respected him and valued his friendship. He is steadfast, charismatic and the rock that the whirlwind of Brett’s Holmes revolves around.

Produced in the 80's and early 90's by Granada TV Brett gives an electric performance. Possibly the greatest Holmes to date. They were required viewing when I was a teenager.

I saw #ArthurConanDoyle's #Christmas #SherlockHolmes story, The Blue Carbuncle, twice last night: the 1968 BBC production with #PeterCushing as Holmes and the 1984 Granada version with #JeremyBrett .
Weirdly, Frank Middlemass was in both, as different characters.
Interesting to compare the choices made by the dramatists: both gave us unpleasant Countesses of Morcar, and cutaways to the sufferings of the wrongly arrested James Horner (a suicide attempt in '68, a tearful wife in '84) [continued]
