The new Wallace and Grommet claymation movie on BBC accurately sends up narrowboating with its high-speed boat chase, when a very aged person and her dog walking on the towpath slightly outpace the boats on the canal.

When I mentioned this to my friend D, he replied: "Ha ha. Yeah, we got passed by a lady in a motorized wheelchair this summer."

More birthday prep-

I decided to make myself a fancy hat! Inspired by the "boater" hats of the 1920s, the design is simple and made of just 3 circles- with one of them bent to the profile of my head.

I bent it almost entirely out of scraps- even using some donated electrodes and side tubulating it- just like they would have done in the 1920s.

Hey, I am using mercury in the production of this hat just like those mad hatters. Although I am using only one drop- dispensed with a hemetrically sealed glass and teflon injector :).

I underfilled it to just 5 torr (instead of the usual 9) so there will be less resistance and longer battery life- with the tradeoff of shorter tube life- I dont need this to last 75 years anyways :)

I might add "B-DAY" to the front if I have time.

On a bit of a low-energy vibe today as we head into the weekend. Might need to plug in for a bit.

Deathsaurus thoughts are percolating, as are photoygraphy ideas. He's a hugely impressive release in most aspects...but I was distracted for a while yesterday evening sorting through a box of older Generations, Thrilling 30 and Classics releases, which says something about the whole affair I'm not sure of yet. Owning G1 Deathsaurus has been the pride of my collection. Having this new one feels...not the same.

Pipo and Boater are superb fun, though. Look for me shortly mashing them together with the Western-release Stakeout and Red Hot (his original name) / Red Heat (His new Schwarzenegger Movie name) to create a they're-a-cultural-hybrid-shut-up Rescue Patrol.

On Saturday afternoon, troopers received notification from Koliganek's VPSO that a swamped boat was located on the Nushagak River near Lewis Point.

When discovered, the boat was empty and had no...

I've found time to record the launch but it's not all good news. We still have the clatter in the "gearbox" when in gear but not under load. The noise disappears as soon as you add some revs. As you'll read at:
gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
and
gregafloat.org.uk/safari/23090
we now reckon that it's not the gearbox but the reduction gear that is producing the noise and that, we're told, is a problem as it's not a part still in production.

The tank is back but still not fitted. The new tank has metric fittings. All the ancillary pipework now has to be changed to match the fittings. However, launch day is still to be Monday, when the work on the gearbox can be tested. The BSS Examiner will also call and, hopefully, issue a pass certificate. We can then pay the #BroadsAuthority toll and legally move the boat to our mooring in Colitshall on Tuesday.

Dropped in on the boatyard today to see what the arrangements were for the revisit of the BSS examiner. The fuel tank was still not connected. It had to be returned to the manufacturer to be rebuilt. The internal baffles had been fitted horizontally, but there was to be no bung for a fuel level sensor to be fitted, as we will rely on the existing dip stick built into the filler cap. Result: the dip stick couldn't reach the bottom of the tank!

Do bikers have a different experience with herons?

As a boater I find they take off when the bows of your boat get within about 50ft and proceed to land on the bank some 50yds ahead. This gets repeated up to six times until, instead of moving ahead of you they fly back past you and appear to settle at their original position some 300yds behind you.

It's made me assume they all have distinct territories, but I'm not clear how far they stretch.

It wasn't intended, but is turning out that way. As one of the subscribers to the GregAfloat mail list says:

Anyway, you are experiencing what I call the onion effect of restoring old "stuff". You peel and cry, peel and cry. But eventually you have enough onion rings to have a huge plate of fried onion rings! (You may not have experienced that delicacy, but if your cholesterol level allows it is delicious.)

It's been an intense couple of weeks of work on Singing the Blues. There's a 4000 word update at:

For those less inclined to read there's 21 photos to view.
The boats's insides have been stripped out to allow the fuel tank to be replaced. More issues have been found that our surveyor should have picked up, but we hope we're within sight of being launched before the end of September. I've even begun to clean the outside!

I am a little over 6ft and did #harecastle #tunnel northbound in 2002. I don't recall being asked to wear a hard hat which, even then, would have been a requirement had there been a real issue with headroom. Both these images show that where there is a sudden drop in headroom the arch was yellow painted. In the second image you can just make out the northern portal ahead of the boat in front of us.
