Last night I restarted Chrome and I got this message and just like that I'm a Firefox user again

The replies to this post are like the time I joked about python version management not having a single good obvious answer

@vaurora@mstdn.social You could try Chromium or another Chromium based browser. But Firefox with a little fine tuning is a good choice, of course.

@gonzo @vaurora Chromium is removing support for those extensions too, that is just delaying the inevitable.

@yoasif@mastodon.social Oh, wtf...thanks for the information. So, Brave etc. have no chance to keep it?

@gonzo @yoasif Dump Brave. The company behind it is utterly untrustworthy. Founded because the dude behind it is a homophobic asshat who got ousted from Mozilla for big donations to take away gay folks' rights. Integrated shitcoin. Original idea was to make money by not *blocking* ads but *replacing* them with ads he gets paid for. It's an utter clowncar.

@dalias @gonzo @yoasif ah that's why there were dozens of people recommending it on X, it felt very suspicious

@yoasif @gonzo @vaurora Ghostery as an extension seems to work fine.

@yoasif @gonzo @vaurora The current date for full removal is June 2025. We'll find out next month whether they stick to that or delay it.

@vaurora yes, I get that too, but I just turn the extensions back on and give Chrome a two finger salute.

@oldrawgabbit @vaurora

But you won't be able to do that in June.

@vaurora
Sorry to tell you, that Firefox isn't that save neither anymore.

They have changed their terms, so there is space for selling data to third parties.

I can recommend Libre Wolf, or Tor Browser to be on the safe side

@desatyr @vaurora Firefox is better than default Chrome for privacy. Chrome collects more data than Firefox. Firefox does collect some data now, but it's still less than Chrome.

It's similar to comparing Apple and Android. Stock iOS collects less data than stock Android, but GrapheneOS is the better option for privacy.

Firefox forks like Librewolf and Zen Browser aren't affected by Firefox's data collection changes. Brave, a Chromium fork, also offers better privacy than Chrome.

This is just my view on the hole Firefox vs Chrome thing!

@midtsveen @desatyr @vaurora But then there's this considering the Brave thing: mastodon.social/@dalias@hachyd

I read that just above your post in this thread, coincidentally.

@ElBeeToots @desatyr @vaurora yup, but no company or software is 100% perfect, that's just the world we live in 😆❤

@midtsveen @ElBeeToots @desatyr @vaurora Brave is really far from "not perfect". https://www.spacebar.news/stop-using-brave-browser/

I mean, even ignoring politics and crypto scams - they were literally rewriting URLs to add their affiliate links, and when caught, they tried to make fool of everyone claiming it was a mistake.

There are degoogled chrome forks, there is Vivaldi, Brave is just bad.

@shine also when Vivaldi goes open source come back to me! Currently I use zen browser! ❤

@midtsveen Same. I generally refuse to use anything Chromium based unless necessary (one of main reasons to start such browser is WebUSB support). But when it comes to Brave, my trust in them is so low, that I'd still prefer browser that is in a small part closed source over them.

@shine yeah, I agree with you, I don't place my trust in Brave ❤.

@desatyr
That seems to be a misreading of the policy, which has now been rewritten to prevent such misunderstandings. 'Sell' has a variety of non-intuitive meanings in some jurisdictions, but the policy does actually rule out selling your personal data.
@vaurora

@vaurora
Next up, replacing firefox with LibreWolf, due to Firefox doing really dodgy stuff with their terms and conditions? :)

@martijndevrieze @vaurora
I've been using LibreWolf on my desk for about two weeks now.
Since it doesn't save cookies by default, I have to log in sites regularly. I kind of like it, it's been making me more thoughtful about what I'm doing online.
I have pretty much abandoned Amazon except for searching for items I then buy elsewhere, but because I have to log in and use 2FA every time, I avoid it even more.

@RealGene @martijndevrieze you can change the cookie saving behavior in Librewolf, it's a toggle in settings.

@miah @martijndevrieze
I know, and I've set exceptions for a few sites, but I'm not going back.

@RealGene @vaurora
The cookies is indeed something I too at first found annoying, but then got to appreciate a lot.
Amazon in Netherlands at least, is not so all present as it is in the US, so I have no hard ties to Amazon.
My next step will be going for a different phone, now still on Google hardware with GrapheneOS on it. Want to change that over as well. Most likely to a fairphone with e/os on it.

@martijndevrieze @RealGene keep me up to date if you switch to a fair phone, that seems like the only real option. I am already moving towards having a home iOS device for WhatsApp so I could put my banking apps on that too and not worry about support for e/os

@vaurora @RealGene
What I hear from some friends with the fairphone their banking apps just work fine. Main thing you will miss is the wireless payment with your phone, which is fine by me :)

@cbontenbal @vaurora Vivaldi is built on Chromium as well, so they'll be unable to support those extensions in the near future either. They even use the Chrome Store as their source for extensions 😅

@vaurora Duckduckgo have a browser that seems to work well for the website I need to use for work all the time. I'd love to hear a techie's assessment of it.

(FF has been my go-to browser for decades, but there are some form submissions that no longer work on it).

@madies @vaurora Its just another Chromium fork. It does have tracker and ad blocking baked on top so that's a plus but it's nothing super special.

@vaurora This wasn't necessary. You can reactivate the extension and they still work.

@dnkrupinski
For a couple months, until Chrome removes Mv2 entirely (I believe in June.)
@vaurora

@vaurora Oh shit - so chrome is now blocking ublock origin - the once do no evil guys....

@vaurora I found you can still re-enable them, just takes a bunch of clicks

@vaurora I would recommend going for LibreWolf, Mozilla messed up big time again a little while ago

@vaurora

FF is kept on life support by Google. FF hides it's income behind the "Mozilla Foundation", but based on industry reports, receives something like 400 million from G. Which is why when you install FF you get the G. search engine by default.

FF no longer promises to "never sell your data."

With market share dropping to around 2%, companies and governments have less reason to be FF-compliant.

@vaurora Mozilla is probably handing their beer to someone right now...

@vaurora @otfrom I’ve been trying liver wolf. So far I’m pretty happy.

@danwwilson @otfrom I want liver wolf to be a real thing. The logo alone...

@vaurora @otfrom Yeah, ok you caught me. Liver wolf is just an autocorrect fork of libre wolf. I have been enjoying the original though.

@vaurora Time to dump the main fork of Chrome and get an alternative. I suggest Vivaldi!

@vaurora

Reactivate disabled extensions theyre working fine.

@vaurora
I have been using a de-mozzillad Firefox called Librewolf for a few months now on Mac and l
Linux and really liking it. Zero issues that aren't FF core related.

@vaurora Google Chrome has been spyware almost from day 1. Advertising companies shouldn't ever be trusted to make a browser.
