Greetings all. A long time ago when VoiceDream caused a big Kerfuffle around subscriptions, there was a lot of talk about alternatives. Someone had mentioned that there is an alternative reading app that could import from VoiceDream. Does anyone remember which app that was? VoiceDream's audio playback issues and TTS issues are getting old at this point, and it's seeming less and less likely that they will be fixed. Thanks in advance.
@soundshadow87 I think it's speech central. It's definitely got its issues too but it's what I've switched to.
@Yvonnezed I don't want to jinx myself, but anything has to be better than VDR right now. If I could downgrade to the version before AI voices, I'd gladly do so. I'll have to give Speech Central a more in-depth try.
@soundshadow87 Only thing is - it doesn't do audio. I'm using BookPlayer for that.
@Yvonnezed Yeah, VoiceDream didn't do audio very well, so I won't miss that so much. Book Player though is also worth a look. I'm honestly thinking of just getting a Victor Stream with the way things are in the app space right now.
@soundshadow87 BookPlayer is actually pretty nice. I just wish all these stupid apps didn't use their own libraries at all. I want an app that can just use the file system. There's no universe in which I'm putting my whole collection into a single app where I can't get at it with anything else. Ugh!
@soundshadow87 @Yvonnezed VoiceDream is still working fairly well for me when reading text, I just have to close and reopen it occasionally if it's been idle for too long. I also had success with Easy Reader, except it doesn't seem to save its reading position very often unless you specifically close the book and return to the library. Honestly, if I had to pick a standalone reading device, it'd probably be Android. There are some tiny models with headphone jacks that still run Eloquence, and Smart Audiobook Player is a really nice app. plus you then get cellular data if you want it, and way more options for playing other media. The Victor Stream can't play stuff off a media server, for instance.
@simon @soundshadow87 Doesn't Easy Reader need you to be online to use it? I seem to remember having to log into it or something.
@Yvonnezed @soundshadow87 I don't think you need to be online constantly. You do have to log into an account once, but I'm pretty sure it won't just quit working if you load it up with no internet. I can test though, that would be quite an annoying restriction.
@simon @soundshadow87 I honestly didn't like it enough to test it.
@soundshadow87 @DavidGoldfield Dolphin easy reader works well to read bookshare books.
@gwocher @DavidGoldfield Yeah, I don't hit up BookShare very often anymore, so I won't be overly upset to loose that compatibility. I've heard EasyReader is dumb too though.
