While we discuss the Linus Tech Tips issue, here are some useful terms to use instead of "hacked", which do not stereotype a creative community of tinkerers as cybercriminals:
- compromised
- broken into
- successfully attacked
- maliciously taken over
- lost cabin pressure (if we want to be playful)
I'm sure we can come up with many more!
- stole
- burglarised
- plundered
@Joris sure, but it's not about being progressive, it's about being correct.
Currently we seem to be saying "bored teenagers" even if there is an actual sophisticated government-backed attack, and that simply does not help us have an informed conversation about possible effective solutions.
@rysiek
Ah yes, that would not help. Especially if there is blurred line, I believe quite some run of the mill ransomware comes from state-backed teenagers. As in: governments that quite like them causing havoc as long as the targets are convenient.
@Joris which makes it even more important to use clear language that differentiates between "script kiddies / pranksters", "ransomware groups", "government-backed advanced persistent threats", and "a bunch of tinkerers sewing LEDs into their cat ears".
@rysiek pwnd would be traditional
@rysiek Is "exploited" correct here?
@odddev yes, absolutely.
@rysiek what did he do lol

@rysiek I'm a lot more fond of "pwn'd", personally.
"Owned" is also fine.
@lispi314 if we can make it into a mainstream thing I am all for it, sure.
